2002 Maxima Question

Hello all and Good day.. I have a few quick Question's for ya... I just bought a 2002 Max 150K White loaded.. The car was garaged here in AZ non smoker-no leaks its looks awesome. I notice while idling the car has a trusty sound-Almost like it has headers and non stock exh.. I looked everywhere under the car with bright lights-There is nothing rubbing anywhere the exh is in perfect condition looks OEM for sure... I dont get it.. Motor mounts look good--as i said the engine and car are clean real clean no leaks at all-the engine looks like the guy before me waxed it lol Very clean! Also when at idle and i bring the car up to 1500 rpm I notice that slight rumbling sound..

I also notice the Trip/menu buttons on the steering wheel dont work--is there a trick to this? I dont see the display change on the dash..

Last question--At 60 MPH what should the tach read on lever surface in OD?
Thanks so much have an awesome day!!

Just off the top of my head, the RPMs at 60 cruising in OD falls somewhere in the low 2000s. I might be wrong though. As much as I try to pay attention to those numbers, I almost always forget.

Take some pics of the exhaust and share with us.

The exhaust sound could be multiple things. It could be the y-pipe was replaced with one by Warpspeed or Catman. It could be that the plex-pipe section of the y-pipe is leaking. It could be that the pre-cats were gutted.

Photos could be helpful.

check your muffler the pipe that connects to the muffler usually goes bad.

That car sure is clean.

The photos of the exhaust parts look to be in real good shape, but the photo only shows maybe 1/3 of the the part. You will have to inspect the entire flex-pipe, muffler, etc.

It might cost you a couple of bucks, but take the car to a muffler shop. They can put the car up on a hoist and do a thorough inspection.

If the pre-cats were gutted, you would not get a check engine light from this.

There are many possible causes of pinging. Outside temperature shouldn't be a factor. I run my car on regular and right now we are in the low 100s and I don't have pinging.

First thing to do is check the spark plugs. What color is the porcelain around the electrode? It should be a light tan. If it is black, the engine may be running rich and have carbon build up.

And see if the plugs were replaced recently. The recommended plug is the platinum NGK 2647 PFR5G-11. Recommended replacement interval is 105K miles.

The engine rpm at 60 mph should be about 2100 rpm.

Sounds can be hard to track down. That car should be very quiet in stock form.

You may have a loose heat shield or other part of the exhaust. A good way to tell is to strike the exhaust with a rubber mallet in different places. The strike will make a dull sound and you'll hear anything loose make a rattling sound.

bose, non-bose, or aftermarket radio?
do the volume/seek buttons work?
if the previous owner swapped out the radio and back in, they may have forgotten to re-connect the ground button for the steering controls

no special trick to it

wow, wish my car looked half as clean. but i guess that's what you get for living in rust belt states for half it's life.
