Another Max bites the dust

As some of you know, I got in an accident back on Jan 29th. The car (a 2000 GLE) is considered a total loss by the insurance, but I found 2 body shops that would repair it for the insurance money. I have been on the fence for the last 2 weeks on which way to go.

I finally made my decision and it is to let the Max go to the great junkyard in the sky. I couldn't find another 5th gen that I liked enough and definitely don't want to have any part of a car with Nissan's CVT transmission. So I ended up buying a Lexus. Their 3 main problems are 1) the vinyl on the dash board drys up and cracks; 2) the rack & pinion goes out and 3) the headlights get condensation in them. But I'd rather deal with that than having the transmission puke on me. Went through 2 in my 94 Max.

So this coming Friday it looks like the car will be towed away. I'm willing to sell parts off of the car, but the car has to look somewhat like it is supposed to. This means I need to have replacement pieces for anything that I sell. This also says that you will have to come and get said parts as there are only a few days left. For the most part, the car is stock, not modded. I do have the black SE tail lights on the car.

The car is drivable and I do drive it, but not every day. Wednesday I am going to try to pry the hood open. I have a grounding kit and a 1 year old battery, but maybe I won't be able to get the hood open.

I guess I will be fading away from the Maxima.org scene.

It's sad seeing you go - your insights will be missed.

On a more positive note, happy life in the Lexus-land! Which model did you buy?

The ORG will not be the same without you. I hope you enjoy the new Lexus, which one did you get? Like you, my new ride will NOT be a maxima or anything that has a CVT.

Thanks for the kind words, guys.

I am getting a 2007 RX 350. It is one of those pregnant roller skate cars. I wanted to get something that I could carry more & bigger stuff in. After test driving a half dozen of those beasts, the old Maxima is still more comfortable.

An interesting note is that Lexus did not put a power outlet in the rear seat area. On the Maxima, that's what I always used for my GPS and phone charger because it keeps the wires out of the way.

Sorry to hear about the car. I guess I missed the news earlier.

It'll be sad to see you go. Your advice will certainly be missed. I'm afraid with you gone there will be a few more Maximas following yours to the salvage yard.

That sucks, I feel you about the new Nissan with the CVT, I am feeling the same way since I am staying away from it until Nissan decides to bring the auto back, otherwise I would have to go to Infiniti Territory

Looked at some G37 a while back, very nice car, but the 7 speed auto is somewhat of a turn off for me at least.

Find G37(s) with 6 speed + sedan, they are only ~$25k in Canada so save up $20,000 USD and drive down here

I picked it up tonight. It has 95,600 miles on it.

I will call the insurance company tomorrow to have them tow the Maxima away and send me a check.

If for every time Dennis helped someone on here he got a dollar he could have enough money to buy him another 5gen! And a CVT maxima plus have money left over to fix it when it breaks!!!!

I'll say we start a buydennisa5gen.com trust fund and take donations !!!! I'll start with $100

Side note: It was my pleasure meeting you today and thanks a lot for the WS ypipe!!!

Thanks for the kind words, Nestor. And it was nice meeting you also. I appreciate that you were willing to drive all the way over to my place.

As for that power window jumper, I have some photos in this thread that will show you exactly where to plug it in -

If I had to get a (newer) wagon, it would be a Saabaru (which would need STI drivetrain swap at the minimum).

As for an old one...it would be Datsun.

The rims suck on these, but you get the idea.

I had Datsun 510 wagons. A 1974, 1978, 1979 and 1981. Great little cars. If I didn't crash them, I drove them to around 350K miles.

When I had the 78, I bought 2 Lazy Boy recliners, put them in the back, closed the hatch and took 'em home. It was amazing how much stuff you could get in them.
