I have been doing some research and I cant find any information on actual repair of the gauge cluster for my 2002 6 speed. Most people just go out and buy another used cluster, but with these cars being so old finding a good one, manual, might take a while. I dont really want to ship my cluster out and drive without gauges.

So i get a check engine for P0462 Fuel Level Sensor Circuit Low Input, I ran the diagnostic for the gauge cluster, the fuel gauge seems to only come up to 1/4-3/8 mark, does not come up to the 1/2 mark
so the question is, did anyone take their gauge cluster apart and actually fixed the faulty gauge?

had my dads friend re solder the gauge cluster, so far 150 miles, no check engine, fuel gauge now moves, not sure how accurate, filled up to full will keep track

torque app still shows low voltage on sending unit, but check engine has been off knock on wood, where before it came back every 20 miles

Let me know if that fixes the issue. My gauge is off just like yours and I'm getting the code too.

well the check engine light is still off at around 200 miles, but when I run the diagnostic mode with the Torque app it is showing the code as pending, so I assume it is a matter of time till it comes back?

Any input would help me as well. I'm not getting the code, but when I do the cluster diagnosis( the hold trip reset down while turning key on then tapping three times after reset trick) the gauges don' t sit in the middle and dte light blinks with mileage. I've been told it is the cluster, however the gauge and dte DO OCCASIONALLY read out the correct levels.

I too just got the P0462 code today, sadly; I hate CELs. Makes the car feel old and ghetto.

My research, as well as conversations with my local Maxima friends, is pointing to a fuel level sensor needing replacement. My fuel gauge has been inaccurate for 1.5 years, but would sometimes read the correct level. The past month, I have noticed my fuel level has been stuck at F, which coincides with this code popping up.

Does your car start and run fine otherwise, or do you get a lazy crank while starting up sometimes?

had the same issue, I replaced the sending unit entirely and guage was still stuck at full. Had to replace the cluster and all was good.

Thanks for your insights. Yeah, I did the gauge cluster diagnosis today, and the fuel meter did not get to the half mark as it should have, so I'll have to decide whether to swap it out and lose the original odometer, or just keep resetting the CEL if it comes on, haha.

Do you have to have the code in order for the guage to be off?

No, the gauge can be wonky for a long time w/o throwing a code. My gauge cluster has been faulty for 1.5 years, but in the past month, it's been stuck exclusively at over F, and that's when I got P0462, which is "low voltage from the fuel level sensor."

I reset the light and so far, no issues. I don't wanna lose my original odo bc I dont want questioms raised if I decide to sell or trade in.

Well knock on wood the i35 guage cluster has been pretty accurate, but im gonna try the test thing u guys suggested. how do you do the test again.

I believe it's the cluster. I just bought a used one. I hope it works. I'll inform everyone afterwards as this is a prominent issue on 5.5s.

I can use a GLE cluster in my SE, right? They're interchangeable?

Im not sure about the process for the I35 cluster or whether it's the same as the Maxima's. Maybe the I35 forum might have FSM instructions?

They are indeed interchangeable between trims however auto/manual transmission clusters are not. Just keep that in mind.

I have the P0462 code too and started by replacing with a working Cluster from same 2002 Maxima SE manual. This allowed me to clear the code and the fuel gauge kind of started working. It would go almost to full and then eventually level out to where the fuel level was. I filled up the tank and the code came back after driving approx. 10 miles. So, I replaced the fuel sending unit and cleared the code. No luck,, code came back. I did the diag on both clusters and looks correct. All needles go to the middle.


All that said,, I'm stumped. is it some type of wiring/ ground issue then. This some how breaks the cluster or fuel sender? Any help is appreciated.

Could it be possible that the second fuel sender unit you installed is no good? I've been battling the light myself (it seems to stay off after resetting but will come back on after you fill up all the way till the pump stops), but in my case, my fuel gauge fails the gauge cluster test, so I'm struggling with whether to swap in my spare sender unit or not just to take a shot to see whether it's an abberation where replacing it will make the gauge cluster whole again. If I do, I might as well replace the fuel filter too.

I was able to give another fuel sender a try. I'm pretty confident now its not that. I tried the sender in and out of the gas tank. The Fuel gauge goes to full right away even with the sender out of the tank but plugged in and the float down. Figure the possibilities are,,,,,two broken clusters, some wiring issues or something other (thoughts?). I notice when I turn the key on with no sender plugged in, the gauge stays at empty of course, but the DTE number shows. doesn't show when any sender is plugged in.

Fixed - One of the Wires on the M33 connector that goes to the cluster, approx 6 inchs down from the connector had kink. Straitened it up, made sure the wire was solid in that spot,, Fuel level started working. For the fun of it I put my original cluster back in,,, still broken, the P0462 code came back.
Back will the replacement cluster. All is good


Preliminary Root cause, wire issue, perhaps shorted out original cluster. (if that's possible)


Maybe I should wait to after a fill up and drive too empty before I celebrate.

I had the same issue, a mechanic replaced the fuel pump but didn't replace the lever that reads the fuel level. Its actually at a different mechanic now(former Nissan Tech). He just replaced the engine and now he's going over all other minor issues. But he replaced the lever and it seems to have fixed it. (Knock on wood)
