OnlyIf you think the vent bolts won't break which they usually do due to rust you should go ahead and replace the box

I guess if I'm going to hijack, this is as good a time as any

So my car ran out of gas today @ half tank, forcing me to use that old faithful gas can in the trunk.

I have the p0455/p1448 code but I was told that these wouldn't cause our gas needles to read wrong. (Which makes sense)

Could it be the Fuel pump or sending unit? I saw in a thread that our cars fuel pumps and sending units don't usually go bad. When it did run out of gas, I heard a popping sound from under the hood. Almost like a leak.

Any help is appreciated, as I'm Kinda stumped..

The fuel pump can't cause the fuel gauge to read incorrectly. It is either the gauge itself or the sending unit.

the instrument cluster has a diagnostic built into it that will point all the instrument gauges to a certain spot. This will tell you if the gauge is good or not.

See page 122 in the 2002 EL section for diagnostic instructions. (Link below)

Step 7 of the procedure that points the needles is slow in moving the needles. It might take as long as a half minute.

I just adjusted my gas needle as 2kmaxim suggested in this thread https://maxima.org/forums/5th-genera...l-problem.html (post #33) My needle was a little lower than the fsm before my adjustment so we'll see if that fixes the problem, otherwise fuel sender unit it is.
I'll post results here

Okay, so I haven't seen the p0455 come back yet. (but it's only been one day, so i'll wait)

The gas issue.. after adjusting the needle, the gauge seemed to read properly for a moment. Then it rose right back up to over half tank, when I know it should be near or a little lower than 1/4 tank.

Here's a picture of the diagnostic after I adjusted the needle

Here's a picture of where the needle is now.. when it should be @ 1/4

Some car gauge pro screenshots, hopefully this helps?
(voltage ranged from 0.96 to 1.16)

I have never measured the voltage to the gauge, so I have no idea what the voltage should be. Do you know anyone in your area with a Maxima you could hook your gauge pro to and compare with.

But if the diagnostic positions the needle correctly, then I have to assume that the sending unit in the tank is bad.

Unfortunately I'm assuming the same
I found this chart on page 3 as far as the voltage goes..
