Speedometer/Odometer Issue

On my 5speed I have a issue with just the speedometer and odometer sometimes it works and sometime it doesn't. I have tested two more working clusters in my car and the same issue starts. I'm convinced its a shortage in my wiring harness or one of the pins. I smell a onion type of smell right when it stops working. Also affects my cruise control when it happens. Could this be my speed sensor or harness?? I researched the fsm for the cluster diagram and pins but that can get tricky. lol Thanks

Sounds like it's somewhat intermittent, so could be tough to track down. Make sure you have a multimeter, and check the resistance on the speed sensor circuit coming into the cluster. There's instructions in the FSM to verify the VSS circuit.

Exactly. I tested two more clusters so I know those are good. I'm going to look at the fsm now and pull out the multimeter. Thanks for your advice

I had the odometer problem on my 3d gen and never figured it out. Different clusters could not solve it. Speedo worked. But in your case the speed sensor may be the problem. Nissan is notorious for intermittent electric problems. Hate them.
