They are not illegal everywhere. Covers are illegal in NY.

In NY those are "fix it" tickets. If you remove the covers and go to court they drop it. There's a bunch of violations treated like that here. Going to court is far worse punishment than $110 bucks anyway.

If you forget about it
and get pulled over after 30 days they seize your DL on the spot and give you a blue slip.

Best thing to do is just sign the back and send it in.
they set a date to square off with the township.

its rediculous. I would dispute it based on the fact that you have insurance and you registration and inspection is up to date.

Canada is probably not as relaxed as US for these things.

Are you talking about the plastic black covers that go over your plate? Im surprised those are legal anywhere.
If its the law to have a visible plate, why would hindering its visibility be legal?
Dont get me wrong, I would probably have one if I thought I would never get pulled over or warned for it.

When it comes to things like this I always try to put myself in the shoes of a cop... a cop who may not be an auto enthusiast.
In those shoes, I would pull over every car with tinted plate covers. Those plates are there for me (the cop) to read. If you mess with that, then I think you're up to no good and im probably going to follow you and/or pull you over.

Whether its illegal or not, I think its a risk you're taking. Im sure police hate those things.

got these at walmart. I dont see it as something that's worth a ticket a warning at least. It's a little piece of plastic

Looks like its curved. Covers like that are typically designed to distort the plate enough that it cant be properly read when viewed from extreme angles, which makes it harder for red light cameras/toll booths/etc to nail you. Probably why the cops gave you such a hard time over it, if the machines cant make money off of you, the cops will.

op in what context were you pulled over? was it late night? sometimes when its late, they will use any simple and I mean simple reason to pull you over, saying the silly reason of pulling you over with that but then to further digging deeper to see if the driver is drinking or doing other bad things at nite etc.

You got a ticket because of your car. I call it vehicular profiling. If you were driving a minivan with a hitch mount cargo carrier that was loaded with crap blocking your rear plate the officer would have looked the other way and kept driving.

License plate covers are inherently illegal. Not apples to apples here. He installed a semi permanent illegal item. He didn't inadvertently block his plate on a road trip or short journey to the store.

I have a friend here who put a computer privacy screen over his rear plate (doesn't run one in front, pretty rare to get stopped for that here) so you can only see it if you are directly behind his car. Said a cop was behind him the other day, never pulled him over. Police resources here are stretched so thin (Dallas-Fort Worth area) that cops are letting more things slide in the bigger cities, you pretty much have to be going 15-20 over on the freeway to get stopped these days. But some of the smaller suburban towns aren't so forgiving. We all know some of the stuff we do to our cars is illegal and we can get tickets. That's the way its always been with modded cars.

^^^ +1 ! pay to play, and i agree the suburbs are far worse ! they have less crap they are dealing with from day to day so when they pull over people for petty sheet, its all in perspective
