Deatschwerks DW100 Install

So, my fuel pump died the other day and I decided to do an upgrade that fit my needs. I've got a 2003 with a 2nd gen DE swap, intake, headers, exhaust and tune. I don't intend to run E85 or turbo. I'd read of the Walbro upgrade but also knew there were lots of fakes going around, saw some people complain about the amount of noise they make but my primary beef was that the Walbro produces more flow than I'd need. There's several other quality pumps out there, but most provide more flow than required which all ends up being recirculated in the tank with higher amp draw (close to 10 amps for 255 lph, 15 amps for 340 lph). The DW100 caught my eye as it is a 165 lph pump (@40 psi) with low amp draw (5A @ 60 psi). Price is nice too at $100 US.

In stock form, this car was rated at 255 crank hp. If you work that backwards to fuel flow using a common convention of "Optimal LPH = (Max. HP x BSFC) / 1.585" with a BSFC of 0.5 you get a stock sizing of approximately 80 lph required. With the 2nd gen DE and the mods I wanted to size for 350 crank hp to be slightly conservative. This works out to 110 lph. The DW100 flows 140 lph @ 51 psi, so I feel it's a good, safe fit.

Installation is similar to the Walbro in that the pump is a bit too tall. I had to grind down the nubs of the top test points, and shorten the length of the bottom feet to get the pump to fit into the retainer. I also had to make a hole for the inlet strainer to facilitate installation. We're talking about 5 minutes with a rotary tool to make these modifications.

Junkyard is the solution if you don't need an upgrade. Fuel pumps rarely fail even at 250k mi (for anyone curious).

I didn't measure it as it was operating intermittently prior to replacement. But according to this Delphi replacement the average amp draw is about 5A and flow of 29 GPH (110 lph). https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...431954&jsn=413

So the DW100 is (as described by DW themselves) a mild upgrade to the stock pump, which is a nice way to add a little insurance to WOT high RPM pulls.

They may take a while to completely fail, but they may be causing dangerously lean conditions without any indications if you don't have a wideband. I had to adjust my fueling significantly after replacing the tired stock pump with this slightly upgraded pump. I'd never grab a junkyard pump; RockAuto a stock replacement if you're pinching pennies!
