When I was under the car this weekend I noticed that CV grease is leaking out of the end of the inner boot on the passenger side and coating the surrounding parts with brown sludge. Anyone ever seen this happen before? The boot is totally intact. I'm guessing the grease is losing it's viscosity and is now thin enough to seep out of the boot. I don't think the joint is damaged but I should probably deal with this before too much grease comes out.
Although it's a royal P.I.T.A., I'm inclined to rebuild these axles rather than go with aftermarket/Value Advantage.
I'll probably get OEM boots and I think I'll replace the passenger side support/carrier bearing on general principle. I have both transmission seals and I still have a cartridge of Redline CV-2 grease from another job. The parts alone will cost more than aftermarket axles but I'll probably have better luck than replacing them. Although the drivers side isn't leaking I think I'll do both axles since I'll need an alignment when I'm done and I might as well do it based on age.
Here are my questions:
1. Can anyone who has rebuilt these before let me know if there are any tricks/snags to look out for? I searched the forum and only found pics from one other rebuild and he didn't get into much detail.
2. When the C-clips are removed do the bearing carriers easily come off the axles or are they pressed on?
3. Can the needle bearings be removed from the tripod bearings or are they pressed together?
Any other advice would be appreciated.
