Solid Airbag Light on 2002
Solid Airbag Light on 2002
I have a solid airbag light that I'd like to fix.
Background: My father gave me the car. It's a 2002. He bought it used with a salvage title. It had been in some sort of accident I guessing on driver's side (my father thinks a tree fell on roof). He thinks airbags were deployed. When he got the car airbag light was off. At some point it went on and he just covered it with black tape. It has been into the dealer for warranty work related to the airbags twice.
I also took the car to the dealer to try and resolve the airbag light issue once and for all. Their notes state that a solid airbag light means (1) that an airbag has gone off or (2) there is a failure of the controller. For the harness, their diagnosis was to check the fuse. It was OK, so they concluded that the harness was OK. FYI, They said that's the only way to check out the harness. I didn't have them check out the controller b/c it would've been too expensive. Instead I removed it myself and sent it to a place called Safety Restore to clear any crash data. They said there was none.
I reinstalled the module and still have the light. I've also checked the connectors under driver/passenger seats. Both seem fine (no bent pins or anything). I have a bluedriver odb scan tool. It is supposed to provide enhanced data on nissan, including srs info. It doesn't show any codes at all.
What could be causing a solid airbag light? It does not blink at all. (I disconnect the battery and wait 5 before unplugging any part of the SRS ad plug everything back in before reconnecting the battery) Thanks!

update
well, i'm somewhat of a fool. after much frustration i just found that the srs fuse was missing (not sure if dealer pulled and neglected to reinstall or what).
but now with the fuse in the airbag light blinks and i get codes with my odb tool. the codes are: b1081 and b1086. they are pre-tensioner (r&l) and are "open"
as i said before the connections all look good under the seats, and Safety Restore said there were no codes on the module. however, could i have inadvertently caused the codes by trying to check the connections? (i checked the connections AFTER receiving the module back from Safety Restore - but did so with battery disconnected)

The Pre-tensioner is the Seat belt bucklet it self. If must have had a pre-deployment at some point. Check to see that they are not extended out, or will not lock. Replace the seat belts and you should be Good to go. No heavy diag needed on these cars, If the light is illuminated and You don't have codes for internal srs module failure. Its working as it should. Its telling you exactly what to do. Do not in any way try to test.. Just replace and Go.

Another update: Reality Sucks - I removed the seat belt tensioner and when I shake it it rattles. According to the internet that indicates the belt is bad. I also checked with an ohmmeter and it read less than 2 - internet says it should be between 2-3. So I'm going to a junk yard and see if I can find something to replace them with. If not I'll send them out for repair. Either way, I'll update to let any one interested know if it works. Thanks for the advice.
