Air Intake (?) Completely Disconnected

Hello again,

2000 Maxima, I don't even think I've put 300 miles on it. I brought it to a mechanic for a post-buyer's inspection two weeks ago and they did not note this, don't know if they didn't see it or it happened after or what. I did not look at that part of the car until now. Spoiler alert, I am extremely new to car stuff.

I don't know the formal name for this part, could someone help with that? Looked up Nissan 2Y002 and saw a few different names.

Earlier I saw this point of disconnection:

I wiggled the plastic until it was connected again but I notice it feels pretty loose, is this just a sign of wear?:

I looked underneath and I noticed another disconnection but I don't know how to connect these without tape, the entire air intake (?) feels very wiggly/unsecure and that point feels loose so I've just left it alone:

So I'm guessing I need to replace this part but here are my questions again (and a couple extra):

1. What is this part?
2. I'm assuming the solution to what I'm describing is to replace it? Is this as straight forward as it looks?
3. I have surely been driving my car like this because I doubt it happened the moment I turned my car off and popped the hood, have I potentially caused any damage driving the car like this? What would be the symptoms of this? I have noticed absolutely nothing weird about how the car drives or just how it runs and sounds.
4. Would it be safe to drive a few miles like this to pick this part up at the store? Like I said don't know if I've already been doing that or if it just happened.

Thanks you all so much and thank you for always being friendly and helpful.

Those connections being loose won't bother the engine. Some of them have nubs to hold them in place while others don't and are a slip fit. No fasteners or clamps needed.

I had the same problem. I still have no idea if a part went missing, or if it came from the factory like that. I went on eBay and bought a large generic rubber boot (for an F-150, I think) and tightened it on with large hose clamps from Tractor Supply Co. I did it at the same time as I replaced the battery, so I had more working room in that area. Its very snug now. But like someone else mentioned, it probably won't make a difference in terms of performance.

Just out of curiosity, what is the purpose or benefit of doing that?

to suck in much cooler air and retain factory air box, it's also less restrictive compared to the factory snorkel.....

sucking in hot air really robs these cars off power, it's a night and day difference...

Air intake.

Judging from the first pic it's not a big issue. Just reconnect & check your air filter. If it's dirty, it will effect idle. Really simple, just un snap fasteners on top of box pull up & you will see the air filter. I replace mine every 10,000 miles or so.

Can you post a pic of the snorkel from underneath? Curious how you routed it there? Also, isn't there some sort of intake sensor on the stock setup?

zip ties are your friend, and no parts are needed for this fix, its a dry fit connection that gets loose over time.

i have an 02, which has no intake sensor. I'm sure there's a way the intake temp sensor ca be implemented into the air box.....

I've had it on since the end of March this year, it never gets loose.. everything is clamped tightly so it's a solid set up.

what do you mean by "dry fit connection" ?

just that the stock snorkel / intake extension is plastic on plastic connections. No parts, screws, clamps, or seals or gaskets, (i forget if there was a gasket honestly but i can't picture any rubber there to keep it tighter of a fit)
