LSD Options for 2002 - 2006 VQ Fwd V6 - Jannarelly Design-1

Hi Folks -

Very excited to be assembling a carbon bodied, mid engined VQ Jannarelly north of the border

Having a heck of a time finding an off-the-shelf high quality limited slip differential for track use and aggressive street

Any recommendations?

This VQ and transaxle assembly are likely euro market with manual gear box

Need something within 3 weeks to keep my build on schedule! Cheers !

Stephen

when I was looking, the best option was the helical LSD from the 2002 - 2006 Sentra SE-R Spec V. I went on www.car-parts.com and found a donor tranny for $350. most people change to the Spec V's closer gear ratios but I kept the stock Maxima 6 speed gearing. I've had it in my 02 6 speed Maxima for over a year and it works great. as you can see in the picture below, the Spec V trannys are selling pretty cheap in the salvage yards near me..

yes, the LSD in the 2002 - 2006 Sentra SE-R Spec V shares the same part number with the factory LSD that came optional in the 3.5 6 speed Maxima's

Really appreciate the guidance!

Mine is a 5 speed which doesn’t seem to add up

Likely euro origin

Where can I find the tranny part number? And cross reference to match a year and model of car for other tranny compatibility ?

cheers

Manual? You'll be looking at 95-01 us cars. Don't know what's out there other than the garbage oem viscous lsd but the helical spec v option mentioned earlier won't work.

You should probably source a 6 speed.

Yes manual

If there is a chart for part numbers for engines and trannys would be awesome

What year and model of 6 speeds would bolt up?

In 6 speed boxes what are the aftermarket options for proper lsd’s?

I think my best option is to open the tranny and measure the differential up and send to Quaiffe, Cusco etc

You'll need a 6 speed vq bellhousing, get that and it'll fit

Your help is really appreciated !

As you suggested the bellhousings are different

But transmission side appears to be the same

Just found this however ! Love carpart.com !

2003
Transmission Assembly
Nissan Maxima 3.5L,6MT,FWD,5Y774

Supposedly it is a lsd model according to carpart search engine

You suggested this bellhousing would work

But maybe the lsd from the maxima is viscous not mechanical ?

would be nice to have a complete unit to bolt on !

How is reverse engaged with the shifter in the car cabin on a 5 speed Nissan box vs a 6 speed?

My car has a customer billet shift **** and linkage - not sure that it has a up / down actuation that say a vw shifter has ….

Perfect

If so, then why go down the path of the Sentra SER V spec for the transmission side only?

Cost and availability.

For me it was cheaper to buy the Sentra trans and swap the diff into my 6 speed than it was to find an LSD trans.

280,000 km maxima box
vs 75,000 km on the Sentra box that I have now

would be nice to just bolt it up and go

but should likely rebuild the maxima one with that sort of mileage and track use

when I got my Spec V H-LSD I paid $350 for the tranny and returned that tranny with the tranny minus diff to get my core charge back ($150). I kept the stock Maxima gearing in my tranny since I have no gear grinding issues.

Finally got the box pulled apart !

This should be a 6 speed, close ratio box from a Sentra SER Spec V with LSD

Look correct ?

@slvr2KSE5 when you swapped the diff, I assume you unbolted it from Spec-V ring gear and mated to the Maxima ring gear? I imagine the ring gears don't line up... but the diff bolts do? No special sauce between the diff and the ring gear?

Correct. Ratio is different from the Maxima to Sentra. You can use the Sentra internals with the Maxima bell housing for a short geared trans.

Have you noticed a lower top end with the 6 speed?

Is final drive ratio about the same between them?

No issues accessing reverse with the 5 speed shift **** and linkage in the interior ?

My car isn't a swap. Factory 6 speed car so I can't answer any of those questions but I can say the shift linkage in a 5 speed Maxima will not work in any way with the 6 speed. 6 speed uses cables.
