AC compressor oil

Probably pretty simple but something just aint adding up for me here. Replaced the AC compressor and went to add the 6.8 fl oz of oil but oil began overflowing. I had presumed that the compressor was empty since nothing came out of it when I removed the drain plug, and because the manufacturer stated that oil must be added.

Can anyone confirm that this is the drain plug pictured? Does the compressor need to be removed from the vehicle to be fully drained of oil? Id imagine a good amount of oil remains inside after i removed this plug (while attached to
the car and attempting to fill) because of where its located and because nowhere near the required amount (6.8oz) came out - since why would it overflow if it didnt already have oil inside?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

thats the pressure relief valve. do not add a full charge of oil. youre supposed to drain the oil from the old compressor out of the suction and discharge fittings while spinning the compressor by hand, measure, and add in that amount. theres still going to be oil in other parts of the system.

i usually add about 2oz when doing a compressor (through the low side fitting while pulling a vacuum). usually about 1oz comes out when recovering refrigerant.

appreciate the quick reply! Funnily enough this is pretty much what I ended up doing. I drained the oil out from the compressor and poured back in 1/4 or 1/5th of the 8oz oil container I had. I figured if it ****s the bed its not a big deal because I bought it off amazon and can just return it telling them it was defective.

Its not going to set records for the coldest AC ever, but its plenty cold enough for me

compressors usually just have a fill hole on top for filling and draining.

a few years ago I went with a 4 Seasons compressor from Rockauto for my 02 and they make it real simple. the compressor fill bolt had a pink label with oil amount in the compressor and a QR code that brings you to their chart with how much oil should be in the compressor for the specific vehicle since compressors are shared with different vehicles. it's been 4 years now and the A/C is super cold still. I also changed out the rubber hoses, expansion valve and drier. I do A/C work regularly and it makes it way easier.

best way to get the freon pressure right is to check the line pressure with the hood closed and the vehicle not parked in the shade. you want the high side to be double the outside temp +50. so if it's 100 degrees out it should be 250, if it's 80 degrees outside it would be 210. when the system has too much pressure it cuts the compressor out until the high pressure drops back under 300ish psi. when the pressure is just right the compressor will spin constantly without stopping keeping the A/C really cold.

Just put a subwoofer and a two-way front stage in it and listen to Pantera or Slayer, that'll fix the squeaks and rattles.

Good to see you still drop in. This place is really dead. It's sad to me, being that I've never owned/possessed a social media account. Forums were my place for stuff. Not anymore, My swap project was my introduction to this place and there was still some activity. I am really thankful for that, it was a lot of fun and a lot of these guys really helped a lot. Someday when I get un-lazy I'll install a supercharger and post that. I haven't run my Maxima in about a year. I finally got finished the work one of my other cars needed and been using that as my daily. Poor Maxima is just sitting.

Got any recent pics you could post?

Yep, cars are just getting older and theres not too many of them trading hands anymore. And those that own them dont have much to say anymore. Im getting my windshield replaced next week and then would like to install a front lip thats been sitting for a grip but after that ill see if i can snap some pics once its all cleaned up. Really loving the 300zx BBK i finally got around to installing, it came out great.
