Tried to rebuild transmission, made it worse.

Pretty much the title. Car is a 20th Anniversary Special Edition 2001. It has the re4f04w transmission in there, which is just a re4f04b with a limited slip differential. Transmission was slipping pretty bad. I thought I would have to put a rebuilt transmission in there, but can't even find one. So, I watched some youtube videos and figured I would give it a try. Two of the better videos I saw identified the "High clutch" as the problem areas for these transmission.

Sure enough, upon disassembly, the clutches and steels looked good in the whole transmission except for the "High Clutch" set of clutches. They were all burnt up (1 of them down to nothing) and the steels were all burnt up as well, even changing colors.

I bought a rebuild kit that had a million o-rings, seals, clutches, and steels in it. I didn't want to disassemble more than needed, so I didn't try to take everything apart. I just replaced all of the clutches and steels in the transmission that came in the kit, and I replaced the o-rings that were easy to get to (the ones for the oil pump.

I put everything back together and now the car is worse than before. Previously it would go into drive and get through all the gears, but it would slip badly if you applied anything more than just light throttle.

Now, Drive is completely useless. Reverse seems to work fine, and I can get the car to go forward by putting it in "1" and then putting it into "2" after the end of first gear. I'll do some more troubleshooting, but I think I got it to go into 3rd gear by putting it into "D" at the top of second gear. But putting it in "D" from a stop and the car won't even try to move forward. It will even roll backward down the driveway while in "D" It's basically like it's in neutral

Does anyone have any ideas about what I screwed up? I'm hoping it's something simple that I overlooked, but I'm willing to accept that I'm just hosed on this thing. Transmission are basically black magic and I might have ruined mine.

Welcome to the Maxima.org!

Big kudos for tackling on this project yourself. (I also have 01 SE AE 5 speed and I'm already dredging the day when my trans needs any work, knock on wood that It won't be for a while)

My only suggestion is to double check your work and perhaps reach out to Nisformance and ask about their transmission rebuild service. https://www.nisformance.com/mission-...ld-f51-f52.htm

Best of luck and keep us posted on the outcome.
