Rear wheel offset

Has anybody else noticed that, like a lot of (gasp!) GM cars and trucks I've seen, the rear wheels are slightly more INBOARD from the fenders than the fronts? Has anybody measured the difference (say, 10mm) to put a spacer in and bring the rear track to the same width as the front?

Yes the rear wheels do sit more inwards than the front wheels. How much though I don't know I have heard peole dicuss this in previous treads though. I hear offests a lot and I think I have a general Idea of what they are but what exactly does offest means in laymens term? Ours is 45mm if i'm correct but what does all that mean?

Offset is the distance between the centerline of the wheel and the mounting surface of the wheel.

This page has a great explanation with illustrations:

for my older rims, 17x7.5 with 40 offset...i had to use a spacer in the rear to clear the center hub..

Why did you have to "clear the center hub"? And what size spacer did you use?

I've still got my good ol' 15" stock steelies on...but I'm planning on a change
