Sunroof Opening by itself!!

Has anybody had this problem? i was just driving, and then the sunroof opened by itself, just a little crack, but enough for rain and snow to get in....this has happened a couple times now.

my sun roof wouldn't open or close several times, but last week it finally quit working. I took it to Nissan and they didn't have the part, so i'm still waiting for them to call me back on that

Interesting...two 2K2's with this problem but no other comments....

Could this be year specific? No problems with my AE.

Come on gang, let's see if there is a pattern here...

The sliding switch for the sunroof takes a very light touch to move; maybe yours is looser than normal and hard bumps are causing it to slide back. Or is the sunroof opening, and the switch is still in the full forward position?

people who had a 2k1 w/sunroof, and switched to a 2k2 with a sunroof

Does the tilt mode pops up on the 2k2 more then the 2k1, because its fu*cking sucks on the 2k1...it pops out like an inch

YES! I had this problem, and it was quite weird. In my case, the sunroof didn't slide, it tilted up and down again and did all sorts of things. I checked to see there wasn't any condensation... a short circuit in the switch could do it ... and then I let it slide (no puns intended). It happened twice in the 2000+ miles I've driven the car. I haven't detected any pattern yet, and of course I can't replicate it, so I didn't take it to the dealer yet.

Ya, kinda sucks on the '02 as well. I am guessing it opens about the same...maybe 1-1.5 inches.

I haven't had it open on me just like that but i remember the first night I had the max i was in the garage programming the homelink device...i had my sunroof opened and for some reason even with power going thru the car it wouldn't close...eventually moving the switch back and forth it eventually responded but since then no problems with my sunroof

The only odd thing that has happened to mine is after opening it only a few notches (about 4 inches or so) I slid the switch back (to close it) and it didn't close right away. I think I actually had to slide it all the way back and then forward again to get it to close. Otherwise, I haven't had any problems...of course, I've only have my SE for 2 weeks now.

Okay, here's me replying to my own comment with a suggestion.

Since there's no obvious pattern, we can't replicate it. But try this. The manual talks about resetting the sunroof controls after the battery is disconnected etc. Let's try that. Basically, the procedure has to do with (1) tilting the sunroof open with the tilt switch; (2) using the tilt switch to close the sunroof, BUT HOLDING ONTO THE SWITCH FOR A FEW SECONDS AFTER THE SUNROOF HAS CLOSED. This apparently does some reset to the mechanism.

I recently did this, and am keeping my fingers crossed.

Today, after only 4 weeks of owning my '02 SE, I had exactly same problem!!! But then I could not close it. It closed ITSELF when I turned ingition OFF. Since that, I have to hit tilt a few times to open or close the roof. I scheduled the appt. with my dealer's service dept. But I bet they won't help
Initially I blamed it on upgraded alaram that I got from my dealer.
Does anyone else with the problem have updaraded alarm?

I forget I even have a sunroof most of the time but I haven't had that problem on my 2k. Must just be a 2k2 thing. I guess thats what y'all get for having all that extra horsepower in the 3.5L. I'll be glad to trade ya cars if it really bothers you!

Mine has opened on its own a few times so I dropped it off for several reasons (see thread: Computer MPG vs Actual MPG) at the dealers yesterday but they had to order the part. I will post when they fix it.

Do a system reset on the sunroof. I mentioned it earlier on this thread, and it helped. I summarized the procedure. Also, it's mentioned in the owners manual, titled "restarting the sunroof sliding switch," page 2-29.

Thanks, I actually did it the same day I posted. But I drove only once since. Lets hope this is the fix.

My 2K2 has a problem with the sunroof, but it seems inconsistent. A few times the open/close slider stops functioning and another time when closing from a slide it went straight to an open tilt without even hitting the tilt button. I thought that maybe it was that I had gone from a tilt position to the slide open position , but I have not been able to reproduce it. Most confusing, but at least it keeps me guessing

I had to reset mine after I disconnected the battery. The slide switch didn't work at all, and the tilt button would slide open the roof. Since the reset I had some problem with the slide switch not working. I then reset it again. Hope that's the end of it.

I guess the 2002 Maxima comes equiped with an agressive soul that has to figit when it's not racing.

Mine does the same thing. Sometimes it will just pop up by itself without warning. I guess now I know I am not the only one with this problem. And the slider doesn't work sometimes just liek some of you have complained about.

Mine too opened on it's own, dropping snow on my head. I took it in and they played with it but couldn't find any problems. It stopped since I took it in though, so they must have done something right.
