finally raced a tl-s............

ok. i was cruiseing down the highway when i noticed a tl with tinted windows. so i allways wanted to race a tl but just haven't found one to race. anyways he was doing about 75mph . i got close to the rear of his car and it was a brandnew tl-s with a dealer plate.now i figure it wasn't his car so just maybe he would play.next i got beside him and pulled away quickly to let him know what i was up to.i slowed down to 80 and he got right behind me. now i floored it , he gets in the opposite lane and we race to about 120. he could not catch me, i even walked him slowly . i thought he would have passed me with 260 h.p........my car is only a modded 2k1 with auto.

Not gonna knock the TL-S cuz they are nice cars. If they were $3,000 less costly, and have more room I would have considered it even being a sportshift.

I haven't raced any TLS or CLS but I have seen a few going pretty fast in the other direction.

My friend has a TL-s (his wife, actually). He took me for a spin a couple of times... Very fast. I took a CL-S for a test drive (it was a demo) and it had less torque steer than my maxi. I can't wait 'till I break-in maxi & race him. (or his wife, haha)

I know for a fact that the TL-S will not downshift to 3rd gear, at the 70-80mph range, even in autostick, BUT it will rev up to 90mph(?) in 3rd gear. (i forget the exact speeds, so bear with me 'till I'll ask my friend)

Something all of us max-owners could use to our advantage in a MX-TLS duel @ 70mph... hehehe

I'm sorry but it will downshift to 3rd as long as you are going less than 100 or so and it will ride it out to about 105. BTW, the TL-S has 2 overdrives (4th and 5th gear). From 105 and up, the TL-S doesn't have a chance, but just try him from a stop and see what happens. I have a slightly modded 2K2 and will only pull about 2 lengths on a stock TL-S to 80.

Yup. Back when I had my Accord V6 I was able to smoke a TL-P (not type-s) on the highway because my 3rd gear was taller (116 mph vs. 105 on the TL) hehehe.

Now where are the Acura guys? They're late...

What the P mean? Also, I heard that there sport shift is ghetto, it can't redline and switches by itself (unlike the BMW)

My father has a '00 TL and after driving it many times the TL's sport-shift automatically shifts from first to second, for all other gears the sport-shift will not shift until to shift into the next gear even if it means hitting the redline. Although it still isn't a manual.

The only way your auto max could have kept up with a TL-S from 80MPH is if the guy driving the TL-S didnt downshift to 3rd. If your not in the sportshift or D4, the D5 auto will only go down to 4th. And 4th gear is so tall that it takes the TL-S to the 150 MPH limiter without even hitting redline! But 80 MPH in 3rd gear is right at the sweetspot of the TL-S VTEC powerband (and it goes to about 110 MPH), and your auto max would have had a good view of the TL-S's rear end.

But anyway, good kill.

ColgateU, my buddy said that even in sportshift, the TL-S won't downshift at 80mph (or was it 85?)... is that true? I'll ask him again tonight.

Anyway I like my navi, but would love to have your dvd-based one!
Maybe I can swap some region CDs with the other Navi Maxin' folk...

I raced my friend's TL-S in my 2000 SE 5-speed...

And couldn't really pull on him. And I was gaining slowly on him in 1st and 2nd, but by the 3rd gear he started pulling on me.
My car at that time was 2000 SE 5-speed stock. I am gona give it a try again with him in my new 2002 SE 6-speed after break in period is over.

3rd gear of an auto 2k/2k1 max goes up to 125....so don't be so sure that the 3rd gear on the TL-s will rip the max. 80mph in 3rd gear is at 4100rpm on the max auto....its an ok spot to start a race...the TL-s might get a head start because it will get faster to 110(top of 3rd)and its closer to redline at 80 because the gear is shorter but when 4th kicks in the acura the max will blow the TL-s all the way to top speed because we have a lot of power after 110mph with that 3rd gear

2k2 ....lol don't even start me , you'll see that ugly rear all day long if you race them

Sorry ColgateU, but here's what my friend said about his TL-S:

Below 85Mph, it will downshift to 3rd at WOT, and it will let you autoshift to 3rd and take it all the way up to 100-105mph.

BUT:
Above 85mph at WOT, the tranny will NOT downshift to 3rd, and the autoshifter will refuse to let you get there...

BUT#2:
You can use the gated shifter to drop it into 3rd...

BUT#3:
The TL driver will probably loose some valuable time "messing with the gated shifter" approx. 90msec (which is enough for me to finish the 1/4mile - well at least in my dream it is)

ANOTHER BONUS FOR MAX FOLK:
If the TL-S driver is using the autoshifter, there is a small delay between downshifts & upshifts about 0.5 to 0.9sec... My brother's RSX has the same delay.

BTW: I'm not bashing TLs or RSXs, I like all of 'em a lot! I'm just trying to get some useful (hopefully) info out there to the max people planning on racing a TL-S. I know I will soon.

Pick your battles above 85mph, and it's a guaranteed win for 2k2s!!! Ok, ok, nothing is guaranteed... but there's a better chance that you'll pull away from the TL-S @90mph, than from a red light.

Dayum...that's just messed up. So above 85 you can downshift to 3rd via the gated shifter but not SportShift?? LOL. What's the likelihood of somebody remembering all of that in the heat of battle?

And I won't even mention the $3K I'm saving with the 3.9apr... Hey that's probably enough to get me a professional racecar driver... yeah... that'll give me a sure win right guys?...

Thanks! Hehe... my first choice was the TL-S (shh, don't let the others find out!), but it was too pricey. I wish I had the DVD navi, instead of the CD. You need a different CD for each region.

But my 255ponies know how to turn that frown inside-out..dough... I mean Upside-Down!

Oh the 2002 navi is CD based? Im sure they will upgrade it later on, cuz that will get annoying to alot of owners.

Yeah the Navi is CD-based for 2k2, but I hear the G35 is getting a DVD-based system, which could mean the next max will get it 2. And I've seen the voice-operated DVD system in the Q45... all I have to say is D A M N...

It sux that I must swap a CD ($120 a pop) to go between regions! And I have to know which highway to take to cross regions... which can only be done with a Map, so WTF is the Navi there for? Oh, right it helps me find ATMs...

I wish I would have known this before the purchase. I would have picked up the base GLE, and added the Pioneer aftermarket DVD w/voice recogn. But can't complain too much - the honeyz seem to LuV it!
