Winter and HLSD = Awesome!!
Winter and HLSD = Awesome!!
I am in the Chicago area and we are in the middle of a little blizzard
. Right now we probably have about 2-3 inches on the ground and it still coming.
On my drive home I got to really experience the HLSD for the first time...I cannot say enough good things about it. My previous car had an open diff and the only way I could get up to speed was to have a long runway and the front end was impossible to control. With the Max, I was able to actually accelerate…no AWD, but not shabby. I felt a lot safer in the car and felt confident that I could moderately accelerate if I had to.
If you are up North...it is really worth the $400 and the wait (if you had to wait).
I guess that is why they are making HLSD standard in Canada (at least that is what I heard).

I would definitely agree with Brian... I experienced the same kind of stability and traction when we had snow Tuesday night of this week!!! Even with the stock Potenza's, which aren't supposed to be too good in snow, everything remains stable and under control!!! Not Quattro, but a huge improvement over a regular open differential
I was impressed with how my HLSD max pulled out of my subdivision. There is quite a bit of loose gravel/stones from the crumbling concrete that you stop on. With my Lumina (open diff) even with fairly light acceleration the car would get one wheel spinning really easily and you wouldn't go anywhere. This of course presents a problem when you're trying to pull into traffic going 45MPH. The Maxima with the HLSD just grabs the road and pulls right out despite the loose gravel on the concrete. It's almost erie how well it works.
It's actually pretty hard to describe the sensation you get in the car when it does its magic. You basically have to drive one and experience it.
