HELP Tumbler in ignition broke, key wount turn, how do I...

The key will no longer turn in the ignition. Steering wheel is locked, gear selector is in park, car is stuck in driveway.

How do we get the gear selector out of park?? If there a manual release someplace?

2000 GLE.

Thanks Guys..

It's been doing this for a while, it's not the steering wheel lock, it's the actual tumbler thats shot. The car is right up against the garage, we have to get it towed to the dealer but the thing is in park. I really don't want them to drag it out of the driveway, there must be a way to manually get the shift lever to move.

You might try jacking up the car and putting some boards with wheels under the front wheels. Then you can roll it carefully out of the driveway with someone in the car using the e-brake.

Good idea Ants. I can't believe Nissan doesn't have a way to get the car out of park. Even GM has an override button for situations like this. ****es me off... My salesman had to rent a car today to get to work.

hmmm

I always thought the override shot would work, power or not. But I guess I never tried it ACC power off.

That sucks.... Try jacking the car with with a floor jack on the front frame member(in the middle). Then you should be able to move the car gently. This is how I move cars around in the garage so I dont have to run around looking for 50 different sets of keys. At least that way it will be out of the way.... Maybe even consider turning it around so you could get a wrecker to lift it from the front. I know, I prefer flat beds when getting towed too, but under the circumstances, sounds like you dont have that many options without dragging the car in gear.... Good luck.

Dont worry about it, A real tow trunk guy will put the front wheels on these dollys and still get the car to the dealer without damanging the tranny or drivetrain.

A dolly aint nothing but a set of casters under neath the front wheels he puts under there once he jacks up the front. He will still get it out of there if it is was in your garage.

Dont do the jack thing yourself cause if the car starts moving (if you got a slope), you might not be able to stop it.

Just let the tow truck guy handle it.

Thanks BigDogJonx, The Jack idea did cross our minds, but they just spend 5 grand on a brand new driveway. If I leave marks from my floor jack wheels in the black top, his wife will beat us both senceless.

We'll just tell the towing company what our problem is and I guess they'll take care of it. Can't wait to see what Nissan is going to charge us for this one. New ignition, keys, programming, I'm thinking 400 bucks. Not to mention the tow.

Thanks for all your help guys!

Now is it me, or are the 4th gens less prone to all this crap? Guess I'm glad I got a 99.
