i think the stock bose system SUCKS... It's a huge waste of $1,000. If i could change anything on it, i would add a center channel speaker and BIGGER sub...

my opinion...

is that it varies greatly with the type of music you listen to and the volume in which you listen.

At moderate volume, most music is reproduced fairly well. At higher volumes, if the rattles dont bother you, the lack of clarity will. Aside from the Lexus premium sound systems, I'd say the maxima bose is one of the best. But you are only going to get so much from a 7 1/2 sub (freeair) and paper cones. As volume increases, so will your disatifaction with the bose.

If you want a nice system that you dont have to worry about theft, the bose is for you. If you are wanting to crank something, you'll be pulling the bose out in the 1st year. The head unit is actually a Clarion. it seems to have about the same performance as a midline Clarion deck. (and reliability).

I dont know anything about the stock system.

My Premium Bose 6-disk CD player began skipping ~ 1 month after purchase. Skipping got worse and worse so I finally brought it into the dealer who ordered another head unit. Now the fun begins. Namely, getting the replacement unit from the manufacturer. I was told that it could take up to several weeks to get a replacement. I've just begun the journey. Going on 2 weeks now. Look at what's happened to this poor sap ! :

" Bose radio head unit:

The sound system on my brand new 2002 Altima came with a bit of distortion. The service manager at the Nissan dealership did the trouble shoot sequence and his manuel pinpointed the problem to be... replace the head unit "Bose radio". This was on March 3. The service manager said that the replacement should arrive in about 10 days.

It has been 55 days and the dealer still does not know when he will get the replacement unit. Nissan offers no explation except that the warehouse is out of stock and does not know when they will have them in stock.

Has anyone had a similar problem with their radio or in getting a replacement? Can anyone tell me what I should do? The service manager is very nice and he is very frustrated with Nissan. He has offered to "borrow" one from another car on his lot but I will not let him do that.

Any thoughts????? "

The stock system is better than most others with the exception of Lexus, IMHO.

Aftermarket will always be better.

My Infinity System in My Grand Cherokee was MUCH BETTER> I didnt want the Bose, but Nissas makes you get it, if you get other options..Navi, Meridian..etc... I personally dislike it, but if you listen to Barry Manilow and Striessand all day, you would love it ....

Well, personally, I think they are about the same, maybe my 5th gen is a little clearer when the volume is up, but probally it's all phycological. I've heard a BOSE system with subs, and that sounds pretty good. (IMO)

To ask a question about an opinion of a sound system is only going to invite more confusion. It's like asking a bunch of guys what the worlds best beer is. You ask a 100 guys and you'll get a 100 different answers. I really like the Bose but mostly because of the fidelity it offers. The bass and clarity is acceptable but what I realy like is that it has a certain punch to it that even at reasonable volumes seems to get through the typical road noise. But I do have to agree that at close to $1000 it is overpriced, but I also don't know what a comparable aftermarket setup would cost.

Damn it.. You beat me. The Grand Cherokee indeed has a SWEET sound system. And I love to crank up "Copacabana"...Barry Manilow rocks!!

I didn't even bother with the Bose because of the reviews I've read. I just kept my stock head unit and upgraded the rest.....

what did you use to elminate the rattling? I think the BOSE system is okay except that the SUBS rattle like crazy on some songs

The sound is decent, nothing spectacular, but I have heard worse.

IIRC, the rattling can be solved by installing some foam padding between the two criss-crossing metal rods, trunk springs I think.

Unless your friend is using deck power for those 2 two's then there is no way you have more bass. Maybe he has the gains turned down, but Perfect's rock.

I'm very happy with it. The clarity is amazing. I think that there is more than enough bass. I have it set to low.
I'm surprised that it does max out as low as it does. It must be set to stop before the point of distortion, unlike most stereos that will get very loud but sound bad.
It's loud enough for me though. I'm not the type to impose my music on the surrounding 10-20 cars either.

At $1,000 it's not really that bad. First of all, for those of us that haaave to haaave all options, we have no choice. I've priced a good system, you're looking at $2-3K to upgrade to a high quality Eclipse head unit, boston acoustic separate components, and a high powered Alpine amp + installation. It's not the best I've had, as I get older, I rarely ever crank up the volume, so I don't really care. I really don't feel a need to upgrade, since I will most likely reaplace the car this Fall, or no later than Spring.

If I have to give a scale from 1 to 10 for the stock Bose system I would give it a 6. It's pretty good when you turn it at a low volumn
but not enough bass when you turn it up. If I have to replace it now I will replace the head unit with Kenwood and speakers with MB quart.

I AM older and the volumn level could be better but overall it's better than most and not as good as others, wish it had a midrange adjustment though.

it's not bad enough to make me want to replace it - but then again I don't listen to super-bass heavy music at 120+ db.

As much as I don't have anything our system, it is not Bose. The head unit is a low grade Clarion, speakers are also low grade Clarion components. It is clearly not made for us by Bose.

id rate the bose system in my 5th gen a 9 or a 10. its better than almost every other system out there (cept lexus, mentioned earlier by some others). have you heard the premium harmon kardons in the bimmers? they sound like $#&*!!! you want louder bass? you will definitely not get it from them.

simply put, we cant expect aftermarket performance from OEM... even though we want it to be that way. although i toyed with the idea of getting a new headunit but i decided not to. i love the clean look of my dash and ive yet to see a custom install of aftermarket headunit that makes it look OEM. if anyone has a pic of an installed aftermarket headunit that looks OEM then post a pic, id love to see it. my plans are to eventually get a tiny bit more bass; very likely just one 12. id rather have people look at my car and admire how it looks, not look at my car because theyre like wtf turn that music down.

I think the stock Bose is fair enough for the average consumer, I would say it's a middle of the line sound system, it is like anything else if you want to have the best get ready to spend few thousand, for me it's good enough. Just my 2 cents.

Cheers

I'm happy enough with mine; it sure beats the tinny sounding AM/FM/Cassette that came with my NX2000 oh-so-long ago. It's got plenty of punch for my ears, and with the exception of a few CDs that I just can't get to sound right, everything sounds good.

I asked this question a couple months ago in a similar thread, and nobody responded: Those of you that are dissatisfied with the Bose performance, I'm curious to know what volume you are listening at?

I can't stand to turn it up past 20 unless the CD is an old one that was recorded at a low volume, and 15-17 is generally sufficient for most of my CDs (and I listen to a little bit of everything; classical, old country, lots of modern rock, hard rock, some rap and hiphop, electronica). Listening at level 20 generally makes my ears hurt after more than a couple of songs.

I just have this funny feeling that a lot of people are cranking it up to 25-27 (or max, which I think is 29) with +5 bass and treble, and then wondering why everything sounds distorted.

BTW: Anyone know the power rating for the stock Bose unit? Watts per channel and the watts to the sub?
