Had a 1992 Cavalier thought it was piece of ****, so I convinced my dad to let me have his 2k Maxima and pay half the payments when he got his Jaguar S-type.

Back in December of 1993, my Dad bought a new '94 SE 5spd. It was a beautiful red over black leather. A year and a half later when I got my drivers license, he gave it to me! I was in love. I had the car up until August of last year when a drunk truck driver totalled it (and almost me too). With the insurance settlement, I knew I wanted a new car. I was impulsive and bought a new 2001 Prelude. While it was a great car, it just wasn't me. Six months later, I bought a 2K2 Maxima SE 6spd.

This all started back before i was born. in 1977 my parents, married for a while and had some money, walked into a datsun dealer and drove away in a brand new Silver 280Z 4 speed with black leather. They loved it. The second month they had it, my father got a huge ticket for going 100 in a 65. ( Which was good, cause he was doing 135 2 miles back.) They sold it when i was about 6 cause they could no longer fit me and my sister on the rear luggage rack. My first car was a 87 Saab 9000 turbo that i bought from them and absolutaly loved it. A few years later i had a 96 se 5 speed pull my saab from 140mph. Made my jaw drop. I then drove my friends 96 se auto, absolutly loved it. Hated the slushbox though. Then i drove someone else's 95 se 5 speed. This thing had 120,000 miles on it and pulled like a maniac up to 120. I was hooked. I started working and making money, went out in februay of 01 and bought myself a 2001 SE 5 speed with every conceiveable option (except an auto ) and have been in love with it ever since. My parents, joyed at my decision approved and still ask to borrow the keys!! I still miss the feel of a turbo, and the euro gadgets, but i love the reliability and the broad powerband of the maxima. I think i will always have a nissan. Hope you all enjoyed my story.

Back when I got married in 1982 I was still driving my bachelor Datsun 280ZX. I loved that car but after a few kids my wife insisted that I give it up and get a full size family car. I was reluctant, but then a Nissan ad appeared on TV that described a man who was having a dream—he was driving a sports car, but it had 4 doors. It was a Maxima. That did it for me, I could still have my sports car but with 4 doors. So a bought a ‘91SE and drove it until my current Maxima.

My first car was my parents '89 Maxima SE in the lovely not-quite-black charcoal they no longer produce, nicknamed by my friends the "Batmobile". This car was later renamed "old Faithful" becuase when I sold it last year it had 210,000 miles on it, and its still going (plus its been across the country 4 times)!!! There was something about that 4DSC that made me a Maxima fan, I think it was the fact I could drive it harder than anything and not worry about breaking it. Hell, I used to do neutral drops constantly (ah the folly of youth). So I have spent the last year with out my Max, saving my pennies, and finally I've got my new 2k2, and I expect nothing less than another 12 crazy years with this model.

Nothing else short of $60,000 has the combination of performance and comfort available in a Nissan Maxima. Honestly, you can't get a car with four doors, manual transmission, luxury-level comfort, and the ability to hit 60 in less than 6 seconds until you get into a BMW 540 or M5. Nothing else can match it in the $30, $40, or even $50 thousand price range. BMW 3-series are too small; 530 can't keep up; Volvo, Audi, and Saab have some competitors, but they can't keep up either. If anybody thinks I'm wrong, let me know.

The only thing the Maxima has against it is the front drive layout. Now, if the G-35 sedan ever comes out with the six-speed manual, Maxima may be dethroned.

I was a die-hard GM fanatic. My first car was a '77 Cutlass with a 260 cid V8 (other requirement ). Over the years, I went from car to SUV ('86 S-10 Blazer 4wd with 2.8L V6) back to car (1988 Caprice Classic).

I got exposed to the Maxima in 1985 when a friend of my mother's let me drive hers (albeit less than 100 feet). But for the short time I drove it, it was pretty cool. In 1994, my S-10 Blazer developed a major brake problem and I had to rent a car to go to work. I stopped at Budget in Downtown Chicago and rolled out with a 1994 Maxima GXE in Pebble Beige. This car was loaded to the gills with every conceivable option (except leather) and I was quite spoiled by it.
When the time came to return the car, I wanted to make a deal to buy it right then and there, but they could not do it. In 2000, my Caprice decided to die out because of an oil leak. I went to the rental well again and wound up with a Malibu (died due to electrical problems), Alero (returned due to brakes) and a Grand Am (Bright Red which meant I had to slow it down). During the course of that rental, I was shopping around for different cars. My list comprised of an Impala SS (didn't get due to the infamous Chicago Winter and fuel economy), T-Bird V8 (See Impala SS), Cavalier Convertible (too expensive and insurance would have kicked my a$$), '94 S-10 Blazer (Had a lot of physical damage), Taurus SHO (Never got out to the dealer), Century (Too bland), Malibu (See Century), Grand Am. I even went so far as to look at used Blazers but they wanted too much and I was not in the mood for something that drank gas more than my Caprice did. After nearly 3 weeks of searching, I decided to look for a Maxima SE. I went to www.wwwheels.com and found a Charcoal Pearl '94 GXE with 72,440 miles on it. I owned that car for 2 years but I had a huge ball with it. Plus, I enjoyed the fact that my Maxima did not conk out like my Caprice did in the first 2 months of ownership. Well, 51,000+ miles later, I decided to trade the '94 in on my current '02 SE.

I started this thread and now that the responses have slowed I just wanted to thank everyone who responded. I thoroughly enjoyed reading every one of them and I'm particularly impressed with you young guys and gals that know a quality vehicle when you drive it. I think Nissan must be one of those "Best Kept Secrets" and I hope their reputation is growing.

my family was a loyal Honda fans back in Taiwan...then once we came in to the states...dad switched to Toyota...we have 3 of them....I wanted a Maxima since 91...and finally got it in 2k.

when did I become a nissan fan? since the day I saw a R32 in LA.

My story begins with my first car, a '80 280ZX. I bought that car when I was 19 and it had already been worn out and ragged on by who knows who. It had 196,000 miles on her when I got her. I started treating her good (only in respects to oil, fluids, and maintenence) and she developed an exaust leak off of the manifold.(why i will never get a fart can..NOISE...I HATE NOISE!!!) In the 2 years I had her I put on another 120,000 miles with a never been rebuilt engine or tranny. I did donuts, burn outs, fishtailed around every corner, stop light/sign that didn't have a cop, left black rubber circles in the middle of almost all intersections I crossed at night, I straight up dogged (performance wise) that car to hell, and she was still good to me. I figured that since she was good to me and runing just as strong when I got rid of her as when I got her then the 4 door version would be as good or better. I also have always liked the 4DSC (4 door sports car) phrase, and believe me it most definetly lives up to it. The best $27K I think I will ever spend as far a vehicles go.

For me, I was looking to replace my 91 Camry V6 after the check engine light came on again (and having the front axles replaced due to torn CV boots). I had driven a 97 Maxima for a few days as a rental provided by my company when I relocated, and it was pretty nice. I kinda always wanted a Maxima, but they didn't do to well in crash tests that generation.

Well, that improved in the 5th gen models, and after test driving the Max along w/a 2k2 Camry V6, 2K2 Accord V6, and a Acura 3.2TL, I decided on the Max. The Camry was underpowed in comparison. The Accord was middle of the road and the TL was way too expensive for me due to all the options it came with. The Type-S TL was totally out of the question for me. During the test drive, the Maxima felt by far way more powerful than the others which to me was worth the extra $ over the Accord and Camry. So, I went for it!

started when my dad got a family car n that turn out to be a 1994 gle green one and the legend continue. couples of years later my brother got a 1998 se green one and 2 years after that my girl friend got a 2001 se gray. will i think this would continue as a family tradtions for something. funny.

I was a DSM fan all my life. Got a '90 Eclipse GS 5spd as a sr. in high school. Then a couple years later in college got a '91 Talon TSi AWD. That was my first real car. Modded it alittle. Got it to run with LT1's and 5.0s. Then times were alittle tight, so I had to sell it and buy a Isuzu pickup while I finished my degree in Medical Technology. After graduation, bought a 99 Eclipse GSX, modded the heck out of it, probably spent 6 grand on mods and labor. Then I moved out of my parents house and into an apt. and realized I shouldn't keep the Eclipse and looked for a good alternative. Being a long time reader of Motor Trend I knew all my options. So it was between the WRX and the Maxima. Didn't really want to go AWD 4-cyl again so I got the Max and never looked back. My parents have had a 97 Maxima for about a year now and whenever my Eclipse was in the shop I drove it. And it was a pleasure to drive. So when I heard the new Max's had a 6spd and 255 hp the rest was history! Can't wait to start modding.

I didn't like Nissans for their boxy designs, especially one with a stupid name "maxima". Who would call a car Maxima, couldn't they be more creative in the name? My 1st car was 88 Corsica, then I moved on to 93 Gr Prix SE. I was very fond of that car, and considered it pretty fast off line, I could spin wheels all day long. And one of my buddies bought a 95 SE 5spd and we did a little race. After you know what happened next, I asked to test drive it. Since then, I have gained a great respect for every Maxima on the road. August of 1999-my very first brand new car, Maxima. Looking forward to put at least 200k trouble-free miles on it.
