Hi

I have an A/E and I noticed one small problem with the Bose Sub. It does not have a box around it, which makes it sound a bit distorted, when the volume is high and there is heavy bass. It is not actual distortion but the sound of air being sucked in. Any way to fix it?

Thanx.

well....

i dont have the bose system (i got a GXE) but if you say that there isnt a box around it, then you might want make a box, or get someone to enclose the sub, subs dont sound right unless they are surrounded by a box, this is just my 2 cents, i dont really know if it will work or help you.

Thanx

Thanx for your advice. I was considering to do that. I was only wondering if the other A/E's have a box around them anyways. Thanx anyways.

Sub-woofers

I wouldn't advise putting a box around it. There are three types of sub-woofers, Ported (in box), sealed (in box) and free-air. The woofer in the Bose system is a free-air woofer and is actually using the air-space in the trunk as its resonator. If ya put a box over it, you'll be reducing the Cubic Air space that the woofer is designed for, thus reducing bass resonance..

What he said. It was designed to work best without an enclosure. My suggestion is to just turn the bass down, I keep my bass and treble flat and go + or - 1 if necessary.

The other thing is, and I hear it all the time, is that the rear speaker in the 5th gen Bose is NOT a sub-woofer, it's a woofer (also called a mid-woofer)! There is a difference. A Sub is designed to produce very low frequencies (i.e. below 180hz). What we have is a woofer and it's purpose is not to make slammin' bass but to fill in the sound with some lower midrange/upper bass. If you want a system that can be heard 3/4 of a mile away, you'll have to build one yourself b/c the stock Bose doesn't even remotly have that capability. If all you want is a little more bass think about getting a real sub-woofer instead of trying to make the Bose act as one. Cheap alternatives are SAS Bazooka or JL Audio Stealtbox and these can be added on to the factory system.

Yes, that's actually true. Its not really a SUB-woofer, but its purpose IS for the creation of mid to low bass frequencies. BOSE uses this same technology in their home-systems as well, where there is satelite speakers and a bass unit. Its really just a woofer, but its actually more efficient in creating a wider-range of bass than a sub-woofer is.
