Arrrggghhhhhhh!!!!!!!!! I cant get the vibration out of SSRs/Kumhos. I LOVE the way they look, but I've had them (attempted) balanced four different times and there is still a vibration in the floorboard. I guess this is from the superlight weight and lower profile (wheel weight is 14.3lbs and the profile is a 45 series). I'm just fed up and want to sell them and just get my old OEM wheels back and put a good set of tires on them too. I'm hating myself right now for thinking about this, but I just want that vibration free feel again, and I kinda want the 'sleeper' look back. With my SSRs, every ricer in town wants to race (and lose). Would any of you guys be interested in these. They are two weeks old?

Price......as much as I can get for two week old wheels and tires... FYI, new from tirerack, the total price was just under 2000.00.

They are 17" by 8" and the tire size is 235/45/Z17 Kumhos.

I heard...

that sometimes when all else has failed, deflate them. turn the tires on the rim alittle, then reinflate and balance. You could just have a beading problem.

also, find a shop using one of these
http://www.gsp9700.com/

it has a roller to simulate road force.. nothing compares, it will find out of round tires and side wall problems and also give you a great balance. its amazing.

Thanks for that input. I already went to one of those shops for a balance and the problem is still there. I dunno. Hey Tim, can I buy my 'old' wheels/tires back?????

thing is..

I've committed to sell my old rims on Saturday, I'm not too comfortable flakin out on him and calling it off. Another 2 hour drive for each of us deal (texarkana, he's in TX), he's changed his plans around for me on the deal.

If he backs out or changes his mind, sure we can work something out. I'm supposed to talk to him tomorrow. He hasnt seen my old rims yet so it could still go either way I guess.

If I cant get your rims back to you, I'm sure Sweetsound2001 will have some bare 2k2 rims. I doubt you really want these RE92s back. They are pure suckage Wet grip is horrific. If you plan to put Pilots or A/S's on right away, you'd come out ahead getting rims only.

As much as I like these 2k2 rims, I understand and I will do what I can to get them back to you.

Good man, thanks alot. Let me know as soon as you find out something. Yeah, I'd want the old rims only. You can keep the RE92 to put tomato plants in if you want...lol.

Re: thing is..

Hey Tim,

How about recomending a shop in Hawaii that has a machine like that. I balanced my rims and tires twice already plus through tirerack and still vibrations after 60mph. WTF! I checked tire wear, suspension and just for kicks I threw the steelies back on and no vibration at all. The offset should have been right on. I went with Moda R6 18x8 235/40/18 kumos. Hmm see a trend here! I wonder if its from the tires? I have damage to the rim but its all hubcentric and I am running out of ideas here. I have two brand new in box R6's and am wondering if its worth it to remount and balance the tires on the brand new rims. The damage is not major and would not affect drivability. Sorry for the lengthy post. Any help is appreciated!

I'd advise against putting them on new rims. Sears scratched up my original wheels a while back so they replaced them with brand new ones with the old Kumho tires. I dunno, its really ticking me off though. Does Kumho really have that poor of quality control?

Dude you must be an insomniac! I am in Hawaii and the closest time zone to me is the cali area and its 1:30am there! J/K I don't know about the quality, but I read a in depth coverage of tires and Kumos actually rated pretty well. There must be something that we are doing wrong because everyone else who used Kumos on stockies have no vibration problems. It must be the rims! Or TIRERACK!

Its just past 4am here, and yes, I'm somewhat of an insomniac around finals time. I'm pretty sure its not the rims since this is my second pair of the same style. I'm sure Kumhos are really good and sticky for the price (alot cheaper than sucky OEM RE92s), but I think there quality control maybe really subpar.

Did the rims come with hubcentric rings?

Did the rims come with hubcentric rings? If the wheels arent hubcentric try torquing them while the wheel is off the ground..This might get rid of some vibration

To go with MikeyO

That's what i was gonna tell you. Almost all aftermarket wheels need hubcentering rings. My friend had vibration and the rings fixed the problem. I had a bad vibration and that's what the place where i got the wheels from told me. I got the 2 hubcentering rings in the front and the vibration is a lot less noticable, so i'm gonna go back and get 2 more rings for the back, and if that dont' help i'll get them balanced. I really hope this is it, cause the vibration is annoying the sh*t out of me too.

I'm about 90% sure it is a tire problem or you need hubcentric rings. You get what you pay for those are some awsome wheels and they should be capped with a awsome set of tires. My friend has 5zigen becketts and they weigh 8lbs. and he gets no vibrations. You might also try calling tirerack they are very good at customer support and satisfaction.

My tirerack wheel/tire combo....

has been flawless! Picked them up Wednesday night and installed them then. Put about 75 miles on them in 2 days including a couple of 85 mph jumps with ZERO vibration issues. The rims are Mille Miglia Imperas and the tires are Pilot Sport A/S....Hope you guys figure it out...maybe it is Kumho related, but I find it unlikely to be Tirerack related. Check page 3 of my homepage for pics of my new rims! Good luck!

I dont know what in the world the deal is. I'm just about fed up since its a huge waste of my time to get a complete balance and than drive off and feel the vibration. I dunno.

Yes, the wheels have hubcentric rings in them and they were balanced on both the inner and outer portion of the rims.

I can almost guarantee you its the Kumhos if you have hubcentric rings. Kumhos have a bad reputation for being perpetually out of round (aka the surface of the tire that rolls and touches the ground is not perfectly circular, so they vibrate when they rotate almost like they are almost flat) and the lower profile the Kumohos are, the more of an issue this tends to be. Don't give up on those sweet rims just yet! Try a set of 4 different tires, Nitto, Yokohama, Michelin, anything the same size and speed rating and see if that helps. I think you will be surprised to find that you probably got a out of round tire (or two) and as many times as you balance em, it won't help that problem... Let me know what happens....

Thats probably the case. I wish I wouldn't have bougbht into all the Kumho hype. I'm not real happy with them. Oh well. I love the SSRs, but you know, I still love the OEMs too. Call me crazy, but I love the stealth look. With the SSRs, every ricer wants to race me. It gets old after a while.

I too have the hub centric rings, so I guess its the quality of Kumo then. I should have spent the extra money and got better tires. Damn!

the hunter...

should have found out of round, thats what the Roadforce roller is for. Do any of your Kumhos have red dots on the sidewall? if so, thats a tire that isnt balanced right off the mold, they mark them and usually the red dot is put to the valve stem (or the white dot on our OEM rims).

I'll check that after I get off of work here. Any change in your selling the OEM SE wheels? BTW, what made you decide them to sell them?

oh....

no... not selling the 2k2 wheels, selling my 2k 16's. I love the 2k2s, tires are weak, but the rims look great. I was just saying if I sell the 16's tomorrow, I'll be on blocks if I give you back the 2k2s.

He hasn't called yet, but I'll know pretty soon.

sorry you feel that way. Where did you get your set? There must be some kind of a warranty, just send it back to them. If they fail to make you happy, just stop the damn credit card payment. The sh** gotta talk to you after spending $2000 are you with me?

Maximus1000 i believe you about putting back the OEM wheels on. Let me tell you a past experience. I had konig tantrums and dunlop sp 5000 on my x car. I had them professionally balanced and when i drive at high speed and hit the brake there was always vibration. They might be some rims out these that you may get away with, but keep in mind folks, the stock rims 17" or 16" that comes on our cars were engineered with the correct weight and tire to handle top speed with no vibrations. There is no way i'm getting rid of my 17",, because i know for a fact that when i drive hard and slam brake, no vibration is there.

not exactly...

the only engineered thing about OEM rims is their width and offset. Changing that can make your car 'hunt' or pull, but vibration wont be a problem. Sounds like you had warped rotors. I think the problem lies in improper beading. Too bad we dont all have hours to spend going back to the shop to get it right.. but I dont think there is anything inherently wrong with using aftermarket rims.

Now, if you were really pushing the outer limits of width and offset, I'm sure that vibrations, even slight ones, may be amplified.

nah i did try back stock and no prob. went back to aftermarket and same prob. rotors were good. i wouldn't have posted this, but i know for a fact that i went through this and it's true, but like i said they are rims out there that may have the stock characteristics and may work just as good as stock.

Tim we talked about the problem in e-mail earlier. It seems that whenever you alter something from factory you always have to maintain it like a nut or have to fix it. Stereos are an example. Almost everyone I know that has multiple subwoofers and amps always has to do something to it to fix it. My stock stereo is by far not the greatest thing at all, but at least I can depend on it too work. Now I'm not knocking mods at all. God knows my suspension mods are now far from factory spec, but they had alot more R&D in them than wheels or stereos. I dont know what I'm really saying anymore, I'm just tired and fed up with pouring money down the drain to fix the unfixable.

Too bad about your Kumho experience. I have 245/40-18 Ecstas on 18x8 Evos without any problems.

I do have a lot of experience with vibration and aftermarket wheels on previous cars though. I've had good experience with having them spin balanced on the vehicle. That usually does the trick. At least until you have to rotate them. You're right though, anytime you start modifying, problems usually follow...but that's what makes it fun!

I might consider it fun if didn't cost $$$$ every time I had them rebalanced.

Oh well, I'm going back to stock. I like the stealth look anyway.
