235 45 17 Tires
#121
When it's 7" wide it's 7" wide, not 8". I think Chimps measured from the outside edges of the rim when you should be measuring from the inner side of the rim's bead(where the beads on the tires actually touch the rims)

Is this why there is little to no buldge with 235's on the Maxima stock rims? Or are ALL aftermarket 17x7 rims 17x8 when measured by a caliper?

Friday nights, I go cruise around Sunset In San Francisco looking for cars to add to my kill list. You're welcome to come sometime if you are in the area. Today I added a modded Prelude to my evergrowing list, only 3 cars left on my list I want to beat, Honda S2000, BMW 330, and Boxter type S.
Back to the tires subject.. my tires budge out by like 1 or 2mm, you can't notice it unless u stare at it for awhile. ; ) and oh yes, my tires still are on my rims.

The design of the wheel is responsible for optical illusions that can make the amount of bulge look much less than it is, which means that "eyeball" data is not very reliable. Certainly not good enough evidence for this half inch between "GO" and "NO-GO" that is what this is all about.
If a 235/45 tire measures exactly 235 mm wide on a 7.5" wide rim it will have approximately 0.88" of bulge per side (just over 22 mm). When this tire is then mounted on a 7" wide wheel it will show approximately 1.03" (26 mm) of bulge.

PS: For those of you who want to know how to correctly measure rim width, look at the post on page 5 of the FAQs entitled, "Tire & Rim Association Contour (Rim Width) Charts".

problem was, i had no time (and of course they didn't have the tire size). i was on a weekend trip 4 hrs away from home. tire busted fri night/sat morning. couldn't get tires till sunday, and they had to fix wheel on monday (the day i was supposed to be back). didn't think - and was told - that the spare wouldn't have made it all the way back home. . . .
oh well, what's done is done i suppose.. i guess the answer to my main concern is that i should look to find a set of wheels that are 17x7.5 instead of looking for a single stock rim.
just more $$ flowing out the wallet . . .

Has Russ actually responded in this thread somewhere (I'm too lazy to look through all 7 pages), because he has stated 255s will work just fine on 17x7" rims.
To me, since no legitimate manufacturer will recommend going with 235s on 17x7 rims, I would have a hard time justifying 235 widths just from a common sense standpoint.
It's odd, though, that with 16" rims, some manufacturers have recommended 225 on 6.5" wide rims....I would have speculated that 235 on 7" rims weren't wildly out of the question.......
I guess it boils down to what you think your life is worth.

Profile matters as well as section width, since it defines sidewall height and the curvature that varies with rim width. I'm guessing that the 225's are 55's or taller.

That is correct, the profile does matter.

T&RA Tables
Gentlemen --
You no longer need to guess. Tire & Rim Association Contour (Rim Width) tables for tires with 14" to 20" diameters are now available on Page 5 of the FAQs.
Have fun.

arrrrrgh!!!! i have 235-45-17 tires on my OEM gle rims
I guess im going to have to put them on some new rims, I want 17X7.5 rims or 17X8 rims, will they bulge out??? its ok to a little but I dont want them sticking out too much, will the 17X8's tuck nicely? or will they look spaced out, like from behind will they look wide or just like OG daytons sticking out?
Rims im considering on my 2k2 sterling mist max: (I dont want to up size my rims, I wanna keep the stock 17 inch, so it wont slow me down)
any replies will be helpful!
thanks
