For those of you with radar detectors....

where have you mounted the detector?

does the tint strip that runs along the top deterioate the strength of the radar detector?

currently mine is left of my rearview mirror and right below the tint strip, but id like to move it to a more inconspicious place if possible (maybe above the rearview mirror)

thanks for your input

i put mine in the middle of the windshield, right above the wipers. i dont keep it up all the time though since i live in VA and they're illegal here.

why do you want to be more inconspicuous? arent they legal in IL?

Re: For those of you with radar detectors....

Mine is in almost the same place, except to the right of the rearview mirror. I've also run the power wire thru the headliner and down inside the dash. Becuase it's so high up, and it's just below the tint strip, and the power wire is not visible at all, it is quite stealthy up there

Mine is located right above the clock (basically shadowing the clock) and the wire runs down in b/t the windshield and the dash over to the fuse box.

be careful with that. though radar detectors may be legal in your state...it may still be ILLEGAL for you to have something in the middle of your windshield, obstructing your view.

Just for general knowledge, it does not help to have a radar detector that detects police officers behind you. If you want that, go right ahead, but all it would detect is instant-on if it's on your side of the highway, and if that happened, sorry man, you're burned anyhow. Just 2 cents. I happen to have mine on the left side of the clock in my 2k2 so that the wire goes straight down to the cigarrete lighter. BTW, how hard is it to hardwire my detector from that position across to the fusebox, possible? Impossible?

I've got mine above the rear view mirror, more towards the driver's side. In fact part of it sits on the mirror (got some foam to cushion it) and it also helps to have it here when hardwired. No problems whatsoever. No decreased range, picks up from all sides. Remember, radar is a wave and more than half of the waves you pick up are REFLECTED anyway. Ever notice the sensor for the rear isn't really that big. From 200 yards a variance in radar detector placement of even 3 ft on your windshield won't make a negligible difference in detection time. So be safe and happy hunting. Oh yeah tint strip isn't much of a factor either.

Worked just as well in my old expedition.

Re: For those of you with radar detectors....

I have my valentine on the left side of the mirror. I couldn't put mine above the mirror because it obstructs the rear view of the detector. The tint strip depends on what you have as a strip. If it has a stock strip it will take a little off the detection. If you have a limo strip then the distance is a compromissed much more. I also have the detector wired to the dimming power of the mirror. Good luck.

Just to the right of my rvm, just a bit below the tint line. Power cord goes right along the headliner, down the right A-pillar and into the dash.

My aux display (love those V1's) is right next to the TCS switch, but I'll probably move it since the steering wheel blocks it when sweeping left.

does the tint strip that runs along the top deterioate the strength of the radar detector?
Don't know. Both my antennas have clear views from both front and rear. I'm not sacrificing *any* perfomance from my V1.

He's in Chicago. We got some really bunghole types, that may not pull you over unless they see a RD, in which case, they'll write you up...

No offense, but if that's your attitude, you don't know how to use your radar detector, or you've never used a V1.

I happen to have mine on the left side of the clock in my 2k2 so that the wire goes straight down to the cigarrete lighter.
I used to do that. But whenever I was on the road, I noticed I'd pick up cars following me using *my* radar detector as a warning device. Screw that...

Mine still plugs into my cigarette lighter. I've looked for a good aux wire, but haven't found one yet. Anyone? (And how come Nissan couldn't supply an aux fuse in the fusebox...)

It is very easy. I just used the radio fuse. Your RD will not draw enough current to pop a fuse and run the ground to the side of the box. Check at Best Buy for a hard wire setup. I saw them there for aobut 15 bucks.

You are much more likely to get a ticket for whatever if you have a radar detector in the car than not.

The tint stripe on the windshield (fortunately) doesn't have any metal in it to block the radar.

The higher the better for placement of a radar detector. I run 2, one is nesttled where the sunglasses holder used to be and the other received half a waterproofing and is mounted in the front grill with sound wire running to the Max's door/key chime and the light wire running into an empty slot in the dash in the Check Engine cluster.

Of course it is a rediculous distance to run the wires and they lose juice the whole way......"Radar detector? What radar detector do you mean officer?"

Actually the tint on top of the windshield does affect radar sensitivity. Some car mags tested it, even the valentine 1 web site recommends mounting below the tint.

Look here;

BS. I've picked up SEVERAL coming off an on ramp.

The V1 tells you EXACTLY where they are coming from, so I know where to look once I slow down.

I got mine in the center of the windshield as close to the bottom of the rearview mirror without blocking my REAR sensor. The tint strip is not blocking the front sensor.

Just use one of the empty fuse slots that comes on with the ignition.

I used one for my shift light in the sticky how to, but I don't remember which one I used. If I remember to look tonight, I'll let you know the fuse slot number.

Just snip off a little on one of the fuse legs and push the fuse into the slot with the radar POWER wire wrapped around it.

That is exactly where I have mine. When a cop pulls me over i just hit the power switch(where I am assuming the traction control switch would go, to the left of the steering wheel.) I have never had any problems with it.

Haha... mine is exactly where MAXIMADAVE's is!... same detector too!... well actually mine is the 985, but close enough. Saved me from a BiG $$$ ticket this weekend.

CHECK OUT MY HOMEPAGE You'll see the Radar Dedector Re-wire link up top.

I agree. Psychologically, when a cop sees that, even if legal, they hate it. You'll get slapped upside the head everytime...

I mount my radar detectot right in the center of the windshield, above the level of the wipers. If I do get pulled over, I make sure i rip the thing off the windshield, because a cop DID give me a ticket once b/c I had a detector. He even had the stones to tell me that was the reason he was giving me the speeding ticket, and would have given me a warning if I had not had it. Why are some cops A**holes like that?

Personally, I don't think he was being an a**hole just for giving you a ticket. He was even honest enough to tell you "Thanks for playing. You lose!" Cops know why people have detectors: To speed!!This is the main reason I do not have a RADAR detector. The number 2 reason is that I would probably speed more with one, increasing the chances of getting a ticket.

Hey Dave, how did you mount yours? I mean did you use the mounting bracket from the radar or did you use velcro to secure it?

Thanks.
