2002 Maxima

Hi all, I am new to this forum. I just purchased a 2002 Maxima SE, with an 4spd auto, and love this car. But what I would like to ask you guys is what kind gas milage are you getting?? I get between 15 and 17 in the city, and 24 straight freeway. Is this what you guys are getting, or do I have a problem.Or is this the smallprice I have to pay for having 255 horses? My 96 Maxima gets 19/28, but that only has 190 horses.
Also, for you folks with the automatic, does your car kind of lag when jumping on it, and not really coming on until after 4500 rpm??

My 2K2 6sp gets about 25 mpg for my driving. Not too bad.

I agree. I KNOW i'm not getting any more than 18mph in city driving. And yes, the REAL surge in power kicks in at about 4K. The auto 2K2 is a great performer but its no 2nd gen auto M3.

Give it some time.. I did. I was getting about 22 through my first 6000 miles... I just got the oil changed friday and noticed that I'm getting about 25.9 now... that also includes me being easy on the gas when I don't need it, unless of course someone wants to race

It should start to increase as you break in the engine. Enjoy the car, everyone here does.

I get 23mpg according to the trip computer.

Yes, there is slight lag in the acceleration response. I think it has to do with the electronic throttle control. I learned that the key is to push the pedal about 2/3rd's of the way down and hold it there for a few seconds. Then slowly push the pedal to the floor. I get much quicker throttle response from a dead stop that way.

people need to remember that the trip computer is wrong. its always at least 3 MPG too generous. in reality you're getting somewhere along the lines of 19 or 20 MPG.

Really? I get 360 to 400 miles on a tank...and put in close to 15gallons. I believe that puts me around 24 to 25 mpg.
6spd
...and I drive it pretty hard.

I've read that about the trip computer. If that's true, then the odometer should be off too, correct? So there's really no true way to tell the actual mileage you're getting.

no, that isnt true. all it means is that the method that the computer uses to calculate how much gas has been used isnt accurate. its impossible to know exactly how much gas is left in the tank at any given time due to inclines, declines, acceleration...etc...

the only sure way to know is when you fill it up at a gas station.

i was talking to Mystical specifically on that one. what does your computer tell you you are getting? if you are ACTUALLY getting 24 or 25 MPG im assuiming the computer is telling you that you get more than that?

So if I zero out the "miles this trip" reading on the odometer and fill it up, the computer still doesn't calculate it properly? That right there basically tells me how many miles I've driven on a full tank of gas. All I have to do is divide the miles by the gallons. Worrying about inclines and declines seems a little nitpicky.

thats what im saying. the only was to know for sure is to fill up then divide miles traveled by gallons used.

what i was getting as was that the computer is trying to calculate how much gas is left in the tank every 3 miles or whatever the time period may be. while you are traveling the computer along with the gas guage are not entirely accurate.

Are you sure that the angle you're parked on affects the Max? I know it does that with older cars, but I thought they had overcome that problem w/newer cars? When you're parked at different angles, do you notice your fuel level gauge move up/down?

Hey guys, in my original post, the milage i state was actual milage calculated after a fillup. The milage calculator is a real peice of @@@@, it always show I am getting at least 5 miles more per gallon that I really am. So what is the consesus here, what is the average mileage that a 2002 SE with a 4sp auto get???

i was flipping through my manual a few minutes ago and it said this:

"The guage indicated approximate fuel level in the tank. The guage may move slightly during breaking, turning, acceleration, or going up or down a hill." - Intruments and controls 2-5

Computers aren't 100% accurate so to get a better idea, we need to do it manually- by dividing miles driven since last fill up (this part is accuate) by the # of gallons filled at the next pit stop. As far as angle of incline and such, they may affect the computer display of DTE and MPG- but only temporarily though.

just another example of how the trip computer is inaccurate:

i just went to fill my car up 10 minutes ago. my gas light was on and the trip computer said "DTE: 28" as in, i have 28 miles until i am out of fuel. so i filled up and i put in 15.1 gallons....which means i had 3.4 gallons left.

so according to my computer i would use up all 3.4 gallons in 28 miles. that is 8.2 MPG. definitely incorrect.

im not sure WHY the computer is always wrong but it definitely is.

Same experience here. I had 20 miles reading for DTE, and filled up 16.2, so that means I had 2.3 miles to go.. 9.8MPG beats 8.2, but sh******t, that ain't even close to the reading of 25.9 that my MPG display reads. Oh.. and computers are accurate, very accurate, but everyone knows.. GIGO... Garbage In, Garbage Out. Whatever Nissan uses to measure the approximate fuel left in the tank is where our problem lies, not the computer.
