Service Engine Soon Under Load

I have noticed a trend with my 2000 Max (auto). When I have passengers in the car and pass someone the SES light comes on, and will not reset - it doesn't happen when I'm driving alone. The car downshifts, but the revs don't go that high - so I think the only real difference is the passenger load.

The first time this happened (about 3 weeks ago) the dealer replaced an O2 sensor at the converter and reset the ECU.

Does anyone know about this problem?

You're using 91 octane fuel or higher, right?

That shouldn't cause the problem... it might be a symptom but not the cause.

What code is set when the SES light comes on?

Octane and Codes

I'm using premium fuel (91+). I don't know the code - I'll have to take it in and run on an analyzer.

This problem is especially strange since I only have about 17K on the car, and no performance mods (unless you count the lowered cd due to Zaino).

FYI... there's a service bulletin on 2K's and 2k1's that covers defective coil packs. The problem can be setting a code with SES light coming on or engine pinging. The TSB requires you to run premium gas prior to diagnosing this is the problem... you might make your service writer aware of the TSB when you take it in to see if this is the problem. Repair is covered under the 3/36 warranty but not the 60K warranty.

Look for the TSB in the TSB sticky.

its

an o2 sensor, coils or MF.

in that order. you should have stored codes the dealer can read. there are a few service bulletins out that will help find the problem.

Codes

I got the car in today. The new code is P0158 - an 02 sensor I'm told. The old code was P0138 - O2 sensor at the convertor. I'm just a bit concerned about tripping an O2 sensor everytime I pass someone while my family is riding in the car. Anyone else had this problem?

yeah..

hopefully they have redesigned the O2 sensor. Or you just had a faulty one. You shouldnt have to alter your driving habits.
