Steering Stops
Steering Stops
I have a 2k1 with the 17" wheels
Today I wanted to take the steering stops off because i can't make a *****in god dam* U turn. I turned the wheel all the way to the right, went under the left wheel, so that bolt with the white cap on, at the end of the bolt i attached an adjustable wrench and i pushed it towards the floor(counterclockwise). I tried with all my power, it didn't come off.
I took the freakin wheel off, i put the wrench back on and i standed on it pushing down, but the wrench just screwed the sides of the bolt.
what do i do, please help

Some issues to consider are seal leakage, excessive ware to the rack & pinnion gears, and even suspension issues such as ball joints & strut mounts which will have added stress do to over turning.
This has been discussed before. The SE rack is different then the GLE rack. The GLE rack doesn't have external steering stops, the SE rack does. There are different P/N for both rack & pinnion assemblies. I'm sure the GLE has steering stops designed in the rack to avoid over running it. The SE apparently does not, thats probably why the stops are put on the control arms.
Nissan has them their for a reason.
Its a rack and pinion right? So I would be worried about over running the rack too withought the stops...But then again, I was reading that other thread and the GXE don't have these stops??? I don't understand.
Anybody with a 2k2 GXE confirm this that their turning radius is smaller than an SE or GLE with stops?

Take a 2k/2k1 SE with 16" wheels on it....does it have the steering stops? nope it doesnt. its the same steering rack as the SE with the 17" wheels.
lets also say, you have a 2k/2k1 GXE and you have a 15" wheels on it. You are upgrading to a 17" wheels 7.5" or 8" wide, it can run perfectly without the steering stops.
Nissan engineers are stupid, the company is cheap, so it hires cheap engineers, this thing would never happen on a german car.

I wouldn't take them off if I were you. If you over run your rack & pinion you will wind up with a very expensive repair bill!

I removed my stops on my car yesterday. I checked for any odd noises and such, and so far so good. The turning radius is much better now, actually approaching what a normal car is like, hehe. I know I'll wear through my cv boots faster most likely, but I'm willing to take that risk/tradeoff.

I'm not really sure what to tell ya 2001SE. My bolts were pretty tight, but I was able to get them off with a little effort and the appropriate-sized wrench. You might wanna try some WD40 on the bolts and letting it sit for a bit then again with the wrench.

they only put those steering stops for "safty" purposes, if you put a 17" wheel 8" wide on a 2k2 GXE which doesn't have the stops....and it will run perfectly fine
see what i am saying?
