Gotta stop doing this...

Man, every damn freaking time!

So here's the scoop. 90% of the time I drive my 6-spd Max so I'm really used to the car. Occasionally, I drive the wife's 5-spd 2K, like last night for example. We occasionally take the 2K to spread the mileage around on the cars.

Anyhow, I'm driving last night and accelerating from a stop, finally shift into 5th, and then "try" to shift into 6th...again. This is like the 4th or 5th time I do this.

Its purely out of habit. I mean, I know the car only has 5 gears. I know trying to put it in reverse at high speed is bad. But its like I'm not even thinking about it. Its a reflex, like clutching. I don't know if its because the insides of the cars is so similar (both are black interior with the leather package) or if its just that I am used to shifting into a 6th gear.

Of course, the car doesn't exactly appreciate someone trying to put it into reverse at 100 km/h and makes this nice grinding sound. Luckily, I was doing a fairly light shift so I didn't jam it hard into reverse.

I sheepishly put the car back into 5th gear, hoping the wife didn't notice. Of course, she's no dummy so she turns to me and says: "You just tried to put into 6th, didn't you?". I lower my head in shame and meekly say "yes".

Man, I'm going to have to get a big yellow sticker on put it in the middle of the steering wheel: "THIS CAR DOES NOT HAVE A 6TH GEAR. SHIFTING INTO REVERSE AT HIGH SPEED IS DETRIMENTAL TO THE TRANSMISSION"

R? Reverse?? Heck no man that R (south of 5th) means 'RACE' and if it's a Honda it means 'Rice'

You need to get that fixed...trade in the 2k on a second 2002 Max 6 speed.

Fortunately there is a lockout going from 5th to R. You have to shift into 1-2-3-4 before going to R

Now you're talking! Better yet, I'm going to wait until the G35 Coupe comes out and trade the 2K for that.

I got a kick out of this one - My favorite part - "I sheepishly put the car back into 5th gear, hoping the wife didn't notice. Of course, she's no dummy so she turns to me and says: "You just tried to put into 6th, didn't you?". I lower my head in shame and meekly say "yes". " - CLASSIC!!!!

So did you actually get it into the R gear? Or did the tranny keep you from actually putting it into R?

Re: Re: Gotta stop doing this...

Thankfully no. I think because reverse gears lack a synchro, its more or less impossible to get the car into reverse with any kind of forward speed.

The car just makes a very disturbing grinding noise, kinda like when you miss a shift and try to put the car into gear with pushing in the clutch.
