I can understand the scary part. I was replacing my O2 sensor a few months ago with the car supported only by the jack. The hood fell. I really thought that the car had fallen on me. Talk about pucker factor!

Where do you guys put the hydraulic jack (not the stock jack) when raising the car? Is there a center position for both axles?

If you are raising from the front, there is a lift point that sticks down from the front assembly.

It is clearly designed for a hydraulic jack.

Every time I get under the car, I double check everything because the idea of it falling on me scares the hell out of me. And, unless I have to use the hydraulic jack for something else, I leave it in place as backup for the jack stands.

You can also do one at a time, ex. raise up one control arm hub, place jackstand, raise other, etc.

I had the same fear when I was ~ 16. I refused to crawl under the car hehe.

when working on your car, other than changing one tire at a time (which is what the stock jack was designed for and nothing else), keep something like these in your garage
I agree with MajesticBlueNTO...if you're going to be doing anything to your Max involving a jack and lifting it off the ground, don't depend on the OEM jack. For one thing, they're a pain in the **** and basically suck!...for use IN EMERGENCY ONLY!!! Go out and spend some money on a trustworthy 2 1/4 ton jack and a couple jackstands so when/if you're under the car you can work in confidence and not worry about it colapsing on you. Besides, you can always use it when it comes time to do your oil changes.
A personal experience of mine...I had a blowout on the highway (luckily close to home). I attempted to use the stock jack but gave up cuz it was a hot sunny day in SoCal. Instead of shedding some blood and sweat to change my tire with the stock jack, I called my brother-in-law to pick up my jack and bring it to me. 20 minutes later, I was back on the road. Try to do that with the stock jack... =D

I dropped my mom's 99 Altima once...My dad was at work, she had a flat, I was 15 and the only person with any knowledge around to change the tire...so I put the jack on and the car dropped to the floot...I was scared as hell, But then I noticed that it fell on the cover of the rotors, I checked the rotor, no damage, I changed the tire and no problem ever since. The damn Altima has never had an engine problem since we bought it in 98, I love it.Not as much as my Max tho. It's good to be able to drive automatic sometimes though..:-)
