Suspension Observations & Questions

Gentlemen, have a 2001 Maxima SE with RSB and FTB.
Handling is much better when throwing into curves, etc. However, in normal driving the car seems to get 'whippy' in the back end to the point I need to correct the mild, yet annoying oversteer. I wish they sold a complete set of front/rear sway bars like my SE-R had. Also notice a nervous/skittish feel when driving easy on back roads easy, from the rear sway bar I believe. But here's my question: I do not want to lower the car as I live in Northeast. I would like a good replacement for my struts that will offer some more but not punishing stability. Based on what the list members have on their cars, what are good options and how did the struts in question change/enhance your ride? And yeah, I checked the FAQ's. Hey anybody on list near White Plains, NY? Would like to see some modded cars. Thanks.

Theres no real way to correct it, but I can't belive its that bad, mine just kinda follows right around, not near like a rwd with no traction control...It should feel 100 percent normal when driving straight...Good shocks would be the kyb agx you can select the feel you want.

you don't have any options other than spring/shock upgrades or bushing upgrades to lessen or eliminate the mushy handling characteristics.

Unfamilar with those struts. Assume the KYB is the manufacturer and the AGX is the type? These are adjustable in ride firmness only I assume. Approx. cost of said struts? Thanks much.

Yes, KYB is the manufacturer and AGX is the adjustable type. However, they do not make an application for 5th gen Maxima's..Yet. You can buy the modified 4th gen from Cattman. I would wait if I were you though. The real 5th gen's should be out early next year. Search for more info on the .org

Who sources the urethane bushings, are they worth it?

I just purchased a 2002 SE6 and the suspension sucks. I came over from an A4 with Eibachs and an upgraded rear swaybar and it was much more stable at speed.

Does anyone make a front swaybar kit?

You don't want a front swaybar kit.

Shamus - You can install the KYB AGX rear 4th generation shocks on your 5th gen. I believe they are a direct replacement.
They will provide you with the added stability in the rear of your car that your looking for. These are also adjustable, so if you load your car up for a weekend trip, you can turn up the shocks (stiffen them0 to control the load better. They work awsome!

Maxima already comes with a front sway bar, a SUV wheel gap and very soft shocks. there are only 3 after market replacement shocks.

1.Tokicos - very soft, direct replacement. (stock struts are tokicos btw)
2.Koni - 4th gen shocks insert...req mod for 5th gen
3.KYB AGX - same as koni and cattman sells 5th gen ready struts. heard it has problem with eibach prokit but works fine with HR and Progress.

KYB and Koni are good and long-lasting shocks and both are adjustable. for racing, ppl prefer Koni b/c it gives a better range on adjustment. but AGX is just good enough for street/daily use.

The Maxima already comes with a front sway (anti-sway, anti-roll, stabilizer) bar too.
I told him he didn't want an add-on front sway bar because it would just promote understeer.

Whats the best/typical set up for Max's

I came over from the Audi (many many many engine problems) and went through the suspension (about three times until I liked it) and there were the "standard" upgrades.

Seems like FSTB and RSB are common, anything else. I gotta lower this thing, people like the Eibachs?

Depends on if you want a near-stock ride or not. Eibachs are stiff. H&R's are closer to stock. I belive that Maxspeed's and Progress are too.

there are more bushings than just the FSB.. tons of bushings in the subframe, control arms etc

they are labor intensive to replace, though

The "nervous/skittish feel" at the rear is probably from too much rear tire pressure. Try lowering the rears 2-4 lbs relative to the fronts.
