I've had my max for about 2-1/2 years now. Everytime I hit the gas, I get a rattle from under the car. Does anyone know how to fix this? My trans always seems to stick in gears when it gets hot after sitting in traffic. Can we fix this too? I've been looking and can't seem to find anything on this and if anyone has had this problem too. They are driving me nuts.

 

You live in the Snow Belt so the rattle could be a rusted and loose heat shield in the cat or somewhere else in the exhaust. Had that problem in my old Escort. The tranny, well, have you check fluid level? Have you done a tranny fluid replacement?
I would check both the tranny fluid condition (should be redish in color and should not smell burnt) and the level before anything else.
Check the user manual for the right procedure on how to check the fluid level.

 

I have a rattle also in the exhaust. It happens at very low RPMs when I am heavy on the throttle, i.e. 500 RPM in 2nd comming off a stop sign. Been told by the B.S. manager at my local Nissan shop it's the valve in the exhaust. Yeah, right, it's got enough spring to hold it closed until 3000 RPM and it rattles at 500 RPM, whatever.

 

If you drive an automatic, check the stickies for the TSB for transmission slipping. If you're still under the 36K mileage warranty, you can get it fixed for free by Nissan.

As for the rattle, check under the car for loose stuff. Maybe even take it to a garage, put it on a lift, and see what's loose.

 

Thanks for the info. i'll check the dealer to see if this is a TSB issue. As for the rattle, I guess i'm going to have to crawl under the car and see whats up. Thanks for the info. The car has about 53k on it now, been doing it for about 30k miles.
