The 6th gen is perhaps the biggest, most radical change for the Max. I think Nissan wanted to get it out there early to pull back some Max sales that were being lost from the 5th gen Max to the 3rd gen Altima.
I actually owned a loaded '02 Altima 3.5SE and traded it in for the irresistible Max upon first site.
