surprising Maxima sales for April

I was quite surprised by Nissan's sales figures for the month. See http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/030501/15492_1.html.

One highlight was:
"The all-new Nissan Maxima completed its first full month of sales in April, the nameplate had its best April ever with sales of 11,584 units."

I personally hate the buck tooth in the middle, but apparently that hasn't stopped people from buying it (I'd imagine that most sales in April were 6th gen). Sales of the Max are up 40.9% compared to April of last year.

I think the sales are consistent with what many of us have been saying, most people we run into think the car is gorgeous.

I agree with Maxima04, people come up to me everyday to tell me how much they love the car.

I am guessing that the article is only referring to the 2004 Max, it did say the "all-new Nissan Maxima". I would guess that the 03 models were flying off the shelf too, they are practically giving them away out here. They are offering 5-7K off MSRP, which means you can get closer to 8-10K off.

I really like everything about the '04 except the front end. The grill looks like it was an afterthought and the placement and size of the foglights is not aesthetically pleasing-they just don't look right.

Don't even get me started on that big glass stripe down the middle of the roof.

I sat in one when I bought my '03 but haven't driven one.

I want to drive (correction, own) a 350Z...

makes sense

Last year...people were buying fresh sheet metal....Altima.
This year Fresh Sheet metal + other goodies = Maxima.
Nissan goal: Pepper the public with fresh design!

What I think would worry Nissan is Murano Sales....looking bad. Dealers here in Chicago have 40 or more on the lot. Take your Pick!

I'm surprised because to me, the front styling is a huge step backwards (the rest is ok). The interior of the preproduction car I saw at CES was a mixed bag... in some ways better and some ways worse than my 2K2.

To cite examples (not that I like BMWs), after the 7 series redesign w/ugly rear and addition of iDrive, I thought sales of that car would plummet. The opposite happened. Go figure.

The price has gone up and there are some more interesting competitors or cars to consider in its class compared to when I was shopping (back at the end of 2001). If I didn't have my Max today and had my old car, I'd be considering the Max, possibly the Mazda 6, the G35 coupe, the 350Z and more seriously looking at the Accord and Camry. The 6, G35, and 350Z weren't shipping when I was looking. The Accord and Camry gained power.

I'd most likely get the G35 coupe or 350Z now if something were to happen to my Max.

That's a fair appraisal and I can understand where you are coming from.

Look at all the other fwd cars. I'd take a maxima over any of them. Glad to see these are selling very well.

The Accord only has 240 HP, good but not great, and the Camry is at 210 HP. The Mazda 6 is at 220, but the car seemed too small for me, so I didn't even drive it (just sat in it).

Have you actually driven the G35? If you haven't, go give it a shot. It is a nice car that was unfortunately designed by morons. The seat controls and the mirror controls couldn't be in worse spots. Not telescoping wheel, it is a mess inside. It has great power and sound, but the inside is too small.

The 350Z is in a bit of a different class...

Maxima Sales

Seems to me they must be including all Maxima sales as they give YTD and YTY figures. They state "the nameplate" had it's best month, which leads me to believe they are including the '03 as well.

Either way, word of mouth means a lot and I have not met anyone, on-line or in person, that doesn't love this car. Ultimately, the car has to please only one person and that's who's driving and owning it.

No kidding, there are a ton on my dealership's lot. I am quite surprised, it got sterling reviews in most mags. Now the FX45, that is one mean looking car/truck/thing.

In April 2003 Nissan sold about 5428 2004 Maximas. Is that good?http://www.theautochannel.com/F/news...01/160454.html

Take 11584 Maximas sold minus 9636 import cars sold plus 3479 Zs sold = 5427 2004 Maximas sold. Note, the import cars sold number includes 2002 Maxes, 2003 Maxes, all Z cars, but none of the (all imported from Mexico) Sentras.

Or take 25236 North American cars produced less 13232 Altimas sold less 6575 Sentras sold = 5429 2004 Maximas sold.

If my math or methodology if wrong, please correct me.

Methodology and math sound right in both cases.

That means 04 Maxima sales weren't that good, considering 7904 Maximas were sold in April 2002 (presumably all 2002 models). My guess is that people either liked the 03 Max more or were really drawn to the low prices and incentives on the 03.

So this means that all of the 2004 Maximas sold in N.America are manufactured in Smyrna, TN? Sometimes they divide the production between USA and Japan.

I might add that lower sales figures may be due to the overall economic climate, which isn't too good.

I've always wondered about the decision of Nissan USA to fit V6 engines into the Altimas, because it would (and did) cannibalize Maxima sales.

Yes to the 1st. No to the second as far as I know. I'd read that ALL US bound Maximas are now made in the US whereas previously they were ALL made in Japan.
