Is it just me or does this guy's claim of 47 sound JUST A LITTLE LOW to the rest of you to think that he actually has one on his car? (the "Civic guy")

I will give him the benefit of the doubt that he is referencing "wheel" horsepower gains. Sure, a small supercharger may add(make) 80-100 hp, but quite a bit is lost just to spin the supercharger - just like when you turn on the AC, only about 5-10 times the drag....

A supercharger and turbo are very different but work on the same principle. Each of them forces air into the motor. The supercharger on a civic, most likely Jackson Racing Supercharger, will sit in place of the stock intake manifold. The charger sucks air in from the intake and forces air directly into the heads. The charger is spun by a belt connected to the crank shaft, thus a small amount of HP is lost but the overall gains are still incredible. Typical HP results are about 40%. These numbers fluctuate greatly depending of how much boost (pressure) is being created by the supercharger, smaller pullers on the supercharger create bigger boost because the blades are spinning faster.

A turbo works on the same theory of forcing air into the heads. However, the turbo is not powered by a belt to the crank shaft, the turbo basically replaces your headers and the blades inside the turbo are spun by exhaust. Obviously the exhaust air is very hot so generally an intercooler is required to cool the air before it is forced back into the engine.

Believe me when I say this is a very general idea and it's much more complicated then it sounds. I owned an Integra GSR with a supercharger and I was running low 13's in the quarter mile. Believe me, you've never seen a Mustang Cobra owner so ****ed off until he gets beat by a four cyliner.

Hope this helps.

I think your explanations were very good by the way. Also, as a Cobra owner, I've never had the opportunity to be ****ed off by a four cylinder

close~ if he put down 90whp before SC'ed....adding another 47whp is pretty good. His power pretty much increased by 150%. 140whp with a light weight body is pretty good number.

The best I have put down to the wheel was 273whp...which is about 150% of my NA output. yup, that's with 10psi of SC boost.

you have to look at power / weight and total area under the curve on the dyno graph to tell if a car is a 1/4 mile beast or a dyno queen.

Yeah, that's NOW. But we're talking about a GS-R that was probably manufactured in the early to mid-90s... That's just pretty impressive--even for a 4-banger! Don't get me wrong! I don't like 4 cylinder cars @ all! But even still, that's PRETTY DAMN IMPRESSIVE! Sure, new technology is going to overrun the old stuff sooner or later, but you gotta give props where props are due!

Thanks hofb99. I was really impressed with the performance myself. It was a '98 Integra GSR four door. I would take it to the track and people would laugh until they saw it run. Believe me, I know that any Cobra that had a lot of mods was no match for the integra but a Cobra with a few simple mods like an intake and exhaust was a really fun race for me, more so on the interstate because all I did was spin through first and second gear. All in all the car was fun but I grew out of that phase pretty quick, sold the car, and bought a Maxima...damn I love this car.
