Roar After Punching On ExpressWay

My 04Max Elite AT has a roar sometimes after I punch it on the expressway. If I am going around 75mph and then wish to punch it to say about 100mph for a quick pass then it gets a roar in the front but goes away after the speed drops back down to say around 65mph. The roar will take place if the car is in the Drive or Neutral until the speed gets back down to around 65mph. It doesn't do it everytime so I can't really take it to the shop at this point until it's more regular but just wondered if anybody has noticed this in there Max or do I have a front end or trans problem.

Not too clear on the "roar" sound byte. I would think that this would be natural when punching ANY car. Engines rev higher when you punch them, so this is probably normal... Could you be a little more specific w/ your description?

It's called "wind". Close your windows.

Seriously, you need to describe the roar a little better.

Roar is on the downside not the upside

The roar is like a growl and say you punch it from 75mph to 100mph and then let off the gas you can hear it and feel it in the car. It makes a vibration until it quits at around 70mph but not all the time. It might be a bearing or cvc joint going bad and the high rpm brings it out. I guess I will have to wait until it does it all the time until I get back to the dealer. It does it in Drive or Netural so thats about all I can tell you. jdc1203

I think maybe you're right about it being a bearing or cv joint, but it could also be something as weird as a wheel bearing or motor mount. It could also be something as benign as a vibrating exhaust heat shield or fan shroud. Since you've apparently slipped it into neutral to test it, it sounds like it's probably not the trans.

I would probably take it on in to the dealer if I were you. It's not real likely to be something that could damage the car (or you), but it's impossible to tell based on what you've said.

Let us know what you find out.

mine did that on a local highway, took off from 40 to 75 and it sort of screamed. i approached a stop light and let off the gas and onto the break and the car ended up stalling on me, losing power steering and all electrical. it sucked...

Thanks for the info Mike_TX. There roar rumble doesn't happen until after I get the car up to around 100mph and the let off the gas and you can hear it cut out after speed drops down. It does have a metal sound to it so I will have to wait until the thing does it regularly before take it back to the dealer or trade it off one. jdc1203

Best not to wait...especially w/ something that could end up being very serious. Make an appointment and give the svc rep a clear and precise description of the symptoms...although, he/she may be a little apprehensive about taking it up to 100mph on the freeway!!! lol

Great News! Roar Is FIXED!

Took Max to the Nissan Dealer today. The Service Manager and I went on the expressway and I showed him the roar rumble I heard. He said that it sounded like a vibrating part due to wind at high speed. Sure enough it was the black plastic cover that goes over top of the grille "just a cosmetic part". It has four clips that holds it down and they where really lose. So we looked at another 04 Nissan Maxima that had another kind of clip but made the part tight on the car. So he said they would order the correct clips and problem fixed. jdc1203
