How can you tell when the car was built?

Call the consumer affairs at Nissan with a VIN and they CAN (if they will) give you that info. I did this on about 10 or 15 cars before I got the one I wanted.

In TSBs, there will be reference to Maximas built before date and VIN numbers, to which the TSB is applicable. I used this and did a rough guess.

edify11 - Another way to get a rough estimate of when an '04 Maxima was built is to subtract the serial # (last six digits of vin #) from 800,000 and divide the result by 7700. The resulting number is the approximate number of months after February 1st, 2003 that the car was built.

The above procedure works for all '04 Maxima serial numbers, including those over 900,000. If your serial # is below 900,000, you can simply divide the last five digits of the vin by 7700 and get the approximate number of months after February 1, 2003 the car was produced.

Thanks a lot lightonthehill. According to your formula my Maxima would be around December 03. Not too bad!
