Break in period

This may be a stupid question but, it's been awhile since I have had a new car. How are you guys breaking in your cars? Not over 60-65 mph and not over 4500 rpms? Was it 1500 miles?

Again sorry for the newbee questions.

There's a section in your owner's manual that covers exactly what you should do. Something to the tune of:

1. DO NOT rev engine above 4000 RPMs
2. No harsh driving...drastic stops/starts
3. No "stomping on it"
4. DO NOT travel @ consistent speed for long periods

Avoid all the above for the first 1200 miles. Don't know if it references a speed threshold or not...but all precautions are definitely in your owner's manual.

Here's a link to an online owner's manual:

2004 Maxima Owner's Manual

Go to section 5-14 (pg. 172 of 272 of .pdf file), BREAK IN SCHEDULE...

Hope this helps!!!

Thanks for the info. I'll look it up in the owner's manual.

Every new car I have ever owned, I drove it the same right off of the lot. Never had a problem with any of my vehicles, to include Maximas...

Remember, "Drive it like you stole it"....

break in

Hey there... I went by the manual for the most part. No revs over 4k, no hard braking, and so on.... I have now reached the 1400 mile mark and cannot wait to rev it up a little bit more especially to hear the intake sound a bit more. Happy red line to all.

i've tried to break in my car by following all the recomendations in the manual, but as a teen its has been hard as hell. im almost past 1200 miles and looking forward to really driving my car without feeling guilty.

so to put my conscience at rest, will going above 4000 rpm three or four times for lest than 2 or 3 seconds really damage my engine?

ive read somewhere that you can pretty much start beat the $hit outta the car straight away. Some website on this forum posted a demontration how an engine that was not pushed, did not allow the engine parts to form proper seals, unlike one that had been pushed a bit.

This is still a debated topic on proper engine break in procedures. There was a thread about it in the general forums awhile back. Some people say take it easy for the first 1000 or so miles, while some say push it right away. Check out this site:
