finally got the tint done
finally got the tint done
Took the car over to Tom at The Art of Tint in the city and the results are fantastic...

I went with 35% in spite of the light interior for a couple of reasons, but primarily because it keeps The Man off my back, since it doesn't LOOK like illegal tint. It's STILL not legal in NY, but at least it won't scream out "come test me!" -- which 20% or more would have done.
Overall I'm very satisfied with the job... Tom and his guys are some of the best in the business, and I don't hesitate to recommend them to anybody looking to tint their car. Hell, any place where they do Bentley coupes is good enough for my cars...
Oh yeah, and sorry for not putting 6 coats of wax on the car before I took the pictures... I was running late for work... :P

Well from what the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law (Section 375, 12-a) says, you cannot have any window that blocks more than 30% of the light coming into the car. That's combined "glass and tint".
That doesn't mean that the max tint allowed is 30%... it means that 70% of the light has to be allowed into the cabin, which makes even 50% tint illegal. If you go by the book, you'd have to put Saran Wrap on your windows to stay legal... The only window you're allowed to tint by law is the rear (when you have mirrors on both sides, which I suppose everybody does
)...It sounds ridiculous, but that's the law. CT is much more lenient, with an "block up to 65%" law, which makes 35% legal there, but not 20%.
That's from the DMVs from both states, so unless that's not current, that's the way the cookie crumbles.

It sounds high, especially when you consider those "$99 tint sale!" places around, but I'm a firm believer that you get what you pay for. Tom stands behind his work and you WILL get excellent results. He took off the center brake light from the rear shelf to make sure he could get the rear glass done properly (no cutout around the light) and I'm sure the little mini-square on the back windows must have kicked his ***, but it came out perfect anyway.

I'm not worried though... if you're talking about the bottom of the window, you can't even see the cut. I'll take pictures of that when I get a chance.

I know that if I leave the skyview shades open during the daytime it doesn't look TOO dark. I was gonna have him to 20% on the rear but it looked almost black, and it makes the whole thing look much darker, which I didn't want -- no need to draw attention.

I use mine alot and therefore with the 35% should darken the
interior considerably.

Looks real good, I think you are wise to get a professional job. The low dollar specials sometimes don`t last and then you got a hellava mess.
We are allowed tint (any percentage) on the rear and back windows only. That is not to say that people don`t cheat and put it on the driver and passengers windows but some are caught and many are pulled over. It becomes an attention getter.
