Disconnecting Battery

Is it really necessary to disconnect the battery before installing an aftermarket amp? Will disconnecting the battery cause my Navigation's memory to be deleted?

Any comments will be appreciated.

Thank you!

Yes, it is indeed necessary to disconnect the battery before installing your amp. If not, you run the risk of deleted Nav memory being the least of your worries.

I do not have Nav, so I can not comment on its memory being deleted or not.

Call me crazy, but I didn't disconnect my battery when I installed my amp. I just made sure everthing was hooked up properly before I installed the big a$$ fuse inline on the 6 gage hot wire. It worked out perfectly.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I was thinking of making all the connections and leave the fuse part to connect last. That way when I connect the fuse if anything happens, it should short the fuse instead of the electronics of the car, right?

Basically, I was thinking of just connecting the wire without the fuse to the positive battery post and run the other end of the wire (unconnected to the fuse) to the trunk of the car to the amp and finish all the installations and then connect the fuse at the end.

Do you think that will affect anything if I do it that way?

Thanks for your input.

Much appreciated.

I know this is a dumb question but which should I disconnect? The positive or negative?

I guess it's more dumb to not ask and screw up. lol!

Thanks!

You should ask your question in the Audio and Electronics forum. Plus you will probably get a better answer.

Disconnect the negative side. Current flow is from negative to positive to in a car. Also, the reason you need to disconnect because if you are running a line from the battery to the amp and short it to the vehicle body somehow (ie: running a screw through it) the line will not be fuse protected if you are only using the fuses on the amp. The right way to do this is to install an inline fuse at the connection for the battery for the positve lead going to the amp(s). then the line is protected by that fuse and the amp will be protected by it's onboard fuse as well.
