Converting a non-Nav to a Nav display

Has anyone done this - I looked through the threads and didn't see anything. I have a chance to buy a Nav unit out of a trashed Maxi. Is it worth doing? The yard wants $500.00 for the unit and I have to take it out myself.

Is Nav a "dealer installed" option?

If I "build" a Max on line then check local dealer stock (actually several dealers), I cannot seem to find any in stock with a Nav unit. The same goes for Sat radio, which I know is dealer installed. Is Nav the same? If so, could it not be added later?

For $500 I'd do it as long as it included everything. Make sure that you get the dvd-rom reader, the antenna, the monitor, all wiring, and the trim piece that has the nav related buttons.

If I've missed any parts fellas, chime in.

The factory nav is not a dealer installed option. You can probably piece it together after the fact, but it will end up costing you much more than the $2k sticker price.

NAV can only come from the plant. oem cannot be installed. unless you want to get a salvaged one and somehow try yourself. few are ordered by dealers, you have to look hard or order it with your Max from TN.

Thanks for the responses, guys. I see all the discussions about Nav units and think sometimes that I may have made a mistake in not getting one. To ease my mind, I've checked local dealer inventory and can't find any in stock. The deal I got, and the best deals I was offered by other dealers, were all based on buying one they had in stock. Although I would probably enjoy the Nav unit, the ultimate cost would have been even more than the $2K for the option if I ordered a Max as the overall discount would probably have not been as great.

Beware...the windshield is different on a nav vs a non-nav Maxima.

I have a feeling you'd be wasting your money trying to make the swap. Just buy an aftermarket nav unit...that way it's portable from car to car, while hiking, etc.

Thanks for all the feedback. I think I will go with an aftermarket solution. Even though it would've only cost $500 sounds like a lot of work and I may have been in for more than I bargained for.

you don't have to go with a portable or a windshield one that look out of place, just go with a tv/dvd/navi one that goes right in the dash. more money but a cleaner look.
