Clicking noise from engine compartment
Hi,
I have 05 Maxima and it's got around 1800mi so far. I love maxima!
Only problem I have is that I'm hearing this weird noise from engine when I put my foot on gas and keep it around 1500-1600 rpm. A clicking sound. The noise can be heard in 1st and 2nd gear because that's when it's slow and quiet enough.
I'm just wondering if anyone had this experience or knows what this could be. Hopefully this won't get aggrevated as it ages...
Any input would be appreciated.

Me TOO...The Nissan DTS said no problem found. Good...it sounds like a rattling sound right. Happens in second gear at 1800 RPM and also under greater torque/load at 2800 RPM. Similar sound but more of a buzz. Let me know...I may start a poll to see if it's a common issue. There is a TSB regarding the heat shield.

that may be part of the problem, but I doubt it...

This may be it... It's just weird that I can hear it only at certain rpm range. It can be only heard around 1500-1700rpm and 1st or 2nd gear. Usually when I'm driving very slow through parking lots. I'll take it in this weekend and find out.
Thx alot

Many of us here have had a lose heat sheidl that resonated at around 2K RPM... it took my tech all of about 5 minutes to find it (although, they can never find any of my other problems...).
So, I agree - it is most likely a lose heat shield.

metallic rattling vibration
My 2005 SL makes a fairly high-pitched, low volume metallic rattling vibration through a certain RPM range. It seems to me that it is the resonant frequency range for some part. I can feel the vibration through the accelerator peddle.
I have taken it to the dealership and they have confirmed the situation (both the salesperson and one of the mechanics acknowledge the sound and vibration), but have been reluctant to diagnose it further. They want to sit on it as long as it isn't manifesting any other effects. As far as I can determine, the sound is not associated with any impact on the car's performance or operation. That said, I'm not comfortable with the sound in that I wonder if it is something that is wearing out that will make itself know after the warranty is out. I have been insistent with the dealership regarding nailing down the source of the sound and have a service appointment arranged in the indefinite future for them to do so. I plan to post the source of the noise when it is definitively determined.

s14gt - Do you ever hear the clicking when the car is rolling slowly between parked cars or next to a wall while coasting out of gear? If so, the click is coming from the chassis/wheel area, not the engine. If the click seems to be about once per wheel revolution, it will be in the hub area (probably the front hub). This type of click was reported here several times a year or two ago, and, IIRC, it turned out to be nothing to be concerned with.
Do you ever hear the clicking when the car is not moving, the tranny is in neutral, and the engine is turning around 1500 to 1600 rpms? If so, the click is either the engine or something attached to the engine.
I suspect the clicking is there at higher speeds, but cannot be heard because of either wind noise, or lack of cars/walls right beside you.
Put on your Sherlock Holmes hat (or agitate your Hercule Poirot little gray cells) and do a little detective work. I would bet you can narrow things down to a very small clique of suspects.

Thank you for very helpful comments folks.
My previous hauler (96 240sx) made a clicking sound from the wheel/hub area, so I know what that sounds like. That said, I doubt it is from wheel/hub parts, (it is only obvious during at certain rpm range, whereas wheel clicking sound lasts until your ear is filled with wind/road noise), but now, thanks to lightonthehill, I can confirm where the sound is originating from.

My noise is definately not in the wheel/hub area.
Its only when I accelarate, from about 5-30mph....not coasting or braking. Something is clicking and creaking in there, cant figure out what it is!!
Maybe the heat shield??

I had the exact same problem (sounds like anyways) and after taking it in about 8 times, they found out it was one of the catalytic converters. It had something loose inside of it. They replaced the Y-Pipe (which includes 3 cats, I believe) and it was finally fixed! Before they found the problem with the cat, I had them do the heat shield TSB and it did nothing. This might be something to look at if they can't find another apparent cause...

These can be found on the TSB sticky....look there often for issues. I would love it if you could take a video of you sticking this down the Service advisors throat. This was the last straw with Nissan...
I am in the process of BBB arbitration, which i am sure will not yield the desired results. So I am getting my lawyers ponied up. Got to love finds like this one that just stick it to Nissan hardcore....I am so pissed at them
