Scraping Mud Guards - Lowered Cars

I was just wondering if any of you who have lowered your cars have had problems with the mud guards scraping... especially over speed bumps and other uneven obstacles in the road.

Nooo.... don't let me discourage you. This was just something I thought about recently, but I haven't lowered my car yet. I just wanted some feedback to finalize my decision to finally purchase some springs.

If my mudguards were holding me back from lowering my car, those things would be history in a second.
I don't have them so I can't say anything about them scraping...

Gap vs. mudflaps Gap wins...bye bye mudflaps

The flaps are not going to scrape on a speed bump. As the wheel goes over the bump, the flaps rise up with the wheels. My car has been lowered for 5 months now and I have never scraped the mud flaps. You do have to worry about other parts of your car though.

I have scraped my mud guards, dropping off the pavement onto a gravel road. It sure made a lot of racket. My car is lower than most, with a 3 inch drop in the front. My flaps are exactly 2 3/4 inches off the road (with nothing in the car). I have learned to be more careful where I drive.

and overall ride quality are what I mean by "sacrifices".

eibach's here, no problem with any mudguards scraping, just be careful in driveways as the elevation has caused me to bottom out, but that was my fault for going to fast

im curious as to how you got a 3" drop from the eibachs. did you cut or heat your springs? or did they just settle in at about three inches?

Gee, I would'nt want anybody to get some nasty old spyware from visiting my CarDomain page, so here's a couple pix.

Drilled some extra holes in the struts, one inch higher up.

Fabricated a bracket for the back.

Now the disclaimer: Don't try this at home!

I don't want to discourage anybody from modding their suspensions, but unless you have mad skills in metalworking, please do not attempt to do what I have done. I am a journeyman machinist first and a welder/fabricator/inventor second. I had an idea and I challenged myself to see if I could make it work. It was an experiment. I had to weld bracket extensions on the struts for the upper holes. The struts say right on them: "DO NOT WELD". But I did anyway, because I'm crazy and I know what I'm doing.

I just don't want people to think that they can just go out and start drillin and weldin on their cars without knowin what the're doin. You are messing with critical elements of the cars suspension, an engineering error could lead to an accident. Hence the disclaimer: Don't try this at home!

Hey Roy,

What would you guess this would cost to have done by a professional with mad skills? Sure wish you lived in Houston!

I could'nt even hazard a guess, Jay. Why don't you just get a set of coil-overs? Would'nt that allow you to lower the car as much as you want?

There are D2 coilovers available now I believe for about 1100 bucks. This is a great idea cuz u can adjust ur suspension a number of ways. U can slam it for car shows, raise it for street, lower it slightly for competition if u want. I think there is a camber adjustment too on top. Also, u can put in various spring rates - from soft to stiff. Start savin!!!!

What about bags? I'd like to be able to control the ride height "on the fly". If somebody does'nt come out with a kit for our cars, I think I could adapt a set made for another car.

My car is so low, the resonator scrapes on speed bumps!
