CarChip by Davis Instruments... Beware!
CarChip by Davis Instruments... Beware!
I have previously posted about how great it is. I have since found out the the 6th Generation Maxima uses the CAN Protocol that the chip is supposed to not work with. My check engine light came on yesterday.... Today I took it in knowing it was a bad EGR valve. A fairly criticle part of the emmisions and ping/detonation prevention. Thankfully they replaced it under warranty and cited the CarChip's incompatability with CAN that was the cause of the failed valve/valve sensor.
I have just sent an email as to why there are no Nissan/Infiniti models listed as being incompatible. So I am temporarily recanting the recomendation for the Carchip until I get further information from my Dealer and from Davis Instruments.

I not sure how a chip could cause a failure of a mechanical part like an EGR valve. I can see how an non-CAN scan tool might not register a egr failure though.
But I do believe there are obdII scan tools that are CAN compatible. I saw a few on ebay. Hope that helps
