Reading while driving...

Well my first and hopefully the last "accident" in the Max.

Caused by a driver whom was reading a MAGAZINE while driving in congested traffic. I am very grateful that he decided to read his mag while driving at a snails pace and not faster.

That will take some minor labor to remove...

Last evening, I saw a old lady driver doing it on my left lane. She had a novel on the steering wheel driving and reading. the traffic was not slow either. it was moving at about 40MPH.. Anyone know whether we can report such distracted driving to cops?

You can but they can't do anything about it unless they see it.

I completely feel your pain. Sometimes drivers can be very oblivious... my wife likes to call some of the very 'best' of them "oblivians" or "obliviates".

My dad was rear ended a number of years ago by a lady going about 40 or 50 who was putting on makeup in the car while driving... she had the visor down and was using both hands to apply it. Unfortunately, she didn't see that traffic ahead was stopped, and plowed into the back of my dad's car (who was stopped). He was driving a Sentra (long commute car - got great mileage), and for some reason just had a feeling like he should turn the wheels to the left (he was in the left most lane, so pointing to the gravel median) moments before he saw her approach in the rear view mirror. Luckily, there was no center concrete wall and when she hit him he let go of the brakes and she pushed him into the gravel... almost couldn't stop before reaching the other oncoming lanes. He came out without a scratch, and the car was nearly totaled (not quite enough damage to be considered totaled though - we had it repaired and it was still running great when we sold it ~10 years later). He was very lucky. I think she was also OK, but she totaled her husband's car - and apparently he had just gotten it out of the shop from another one of her accidents. I don't think he was too happy.

I've seen a list (now 5 years old or so) about the most common causes of accidents... and (at the time) cell phones were like #8. The most common ones (I think) were reading a newspaper, drinking coffee, applying makeup, and shaving (!!!) (not necessarily in that order). I think reading a map might have been #10.

Anyway, glad you aren't hurt.

People who are that irrisposible should not be allowed to drive. Granted I have used my cell while driving but I use a headset, people who read and drive should get a ticket. sorry about the accident, good luck.

It's not so much what else a driver is doing, but more that a lot of people cannot focus on more than one thing at a time. simply talking on the phone (best if hands free) is no different than a convo with a navigator for some. but others get all excited and forget they are driving.

i'm sure a lot of accidents occur from simply changing songs. it's sad the multi-task deficients can't realize their inabilities.

but reading, that has to be the worse, eyes and concentration off the road.
some can't even focus on driving alone. ever have somone creep into your lane with you right next to them?

oh, and that super multi-tasking lexus driver? she was prob. using the classic "knees to steer" my track coach in college was doing this on the way to FSU in a van. we thought we were gonna die several times: cell phone, coffee, hoggie, map, and occasional 2nd walkie. during the night, we had to take turns staying awake to ensure we stayed on the road. he kept nodding off and swerving into the grass.

LOL...nah I did not wash it. I was reading all the previous threads on these small accidents and was saying to myself how much that sucks. Just my luck. This makes three accidents within eight months. None of which i was at fault for. Perhaps I have cross-hairs imprinted on my car only visible to other drivers.

BUT the Max will have shiny new coat of paint on her rear come this Monday

Get this- I actually tried to study for my driving license test while DRIVING TO GET MY LICENSE! My dad in the passenger seat gave me a good tongue lashing and I've never tried it since.
