Help a 5th Gen owner with questions about YOUR car...

I'm "currently" a 5th generation Max owner (2000). Those cars are great cars, but do have their 'usual' issues. (Bad coils, MAF sensors, etc...)

What are the 'usual issues' that you guys are seeing with your 6th generation max(s)?

Would you consider them a "well built" car, or not? Why?

Scroll down a page or 2 and the answer will become abundantly clear.

I had a 00SE and just got 05SE 3 months ago. So far I have no problems at 4k miles, some have had problems right away. I'm here regularly to see what I should be looking out for. From what I read here, Nissan may have solved most 04 issues.

"Well built"? YES (with my fingers crossed)

I've got two 05 SE's and no real problems. Just love the cars, best Max yet!!!!!

Most of the 6th gen problems ocurred in the 04 model year, especially the early ones built for the 03 release. Looks like most 05's are okay. My two are early production 05's, Sept. and Oct., and they are fine.

I believe they have the upgraded to the 350z maf, so that is no longer a problem area.

cars are machines... they made to break down and have problems. if there were no problems, they would be no need for the service dept... but anyways, I have an 05 max. the build date was august 04. i have no problems. its my 1st max, and its a great machine. good luck with your decision.

I have an early 2004 (bought about May 20 of 03) and have only had a few minor problems. The biggest was a poor wheel allignment from the factory that caused tire cupping before I found the allignment problem. I have about 32.5 K miles on the Max and just replaced the RSAs (somewhat early) because of the cupping and sidewall cracks. Otherwise, nothing to complain about. So not all 04's have a problem. (I keep waiting for my front struts to go, but they remain fine.)

Didn't mean all 04 have problems, just most problems appear to be on 04's. I'm watching my RSAs (all 4 from questionable lots) and struts too. My 05 was built on 02/05.

I have an 05 SE and it had a climate control problem from day 1. I just havent gotten the nerve (or time) to take it to the stealership. Also, I have a headlight that went out on me although, arguably, I may have some culpability in that.

My 05 SE is manufactured in April 05. Approaching 200 miles. So far so great!

I am a bit nervous after reading some of the problems folks ran into with the 6G. I hope Nissan really fixed all the kinks since early 04's.

I do have a question bugging me: Do dealers proactively take care of TSB issues for all Max on their lot? Or do they usually wait until customer buy and then bring car back with those known TSB issues?

If you have a good dealer that truly cares they take care of the problems, most of them all you have to do is complain just a bit and they address the fixes. Have an 04 with a......few......yea a few...LOL problems, the 05's are improved to say the least and hopefully the 06's will have most of the major bugs taken care of. I will say, even though the car has been out a couple of years, still get a ton of thumbs up and compliments

They had a recall on the airbag light not functioning right. (I actually got a letter in the mail about it. My car never gave me the light indicator problem, but when I took it for service, they checked it without me having to tell them. I saw it on the receipt, then asked the service guy about it and he said "we take care of TSB's when needed without the customer needing to worry about it".

is that a service line or what...LOL

I bought my 04 used and it's a later production. Only minor problems like fog on the info screen and some jerky tranny shifts. I will address these with the dealer as TSB's. Overall a great car! Love the doors, solid, feel like quality when you close em! Only when opening they feel cheap (Handle noise). Kind of ironic because the doors on the inside feel like a tank. Just some thoughts.

Bought 05 in January and no problems here either... except for all these people that want to ride with me... and nephew likes the big window that opens on the roof-sunroof.

i've read several complaints on the goodyear tires that come with the 05's, is this something i should try to get the dealer to swap for a different set of tires?

i dont think it was with the 05's...but some batch of the rsa's started cracking on the inside.. thats not nissan fault (finally not them for once!), but a goodyear problem. My family has 2-05 max's. I have RSAs with 12K miles and are perfect, and my bro in law has 33K miles and his rsa's are still great as well.

here is the infor for the goodyears

I got 36,000 Mi on an 04 SE and only problems have been seat lumbar and bottom seat power tilt up breaking and CD player skipping when it was cold out..all fixed under warrenty..no mechanical problems to this point, overall its a great machine and its more solid than my dads lexus IMO.

Honestly:

Bad struts,
Bad vibrations,
Alignment always becoming off-centered,
Smell from engine at wide open throttle,
Door handle staying stuck in the open position,
Noisy window actuators,

I'm forgetting something, but that's enough to make me not want to buy another Max again... especially since they're built in the US now. It shows.

I've got about 32K on my 04 and the only issues I had were the left strut and the piece of crap RSA tires. Other than that I LOVE my 6th gen!

one TSB

I'm at 18K miles. The only issue has been an exhaust bracket that broke and rattled (covered under warranty). I'd recommend the Maxima. To what else are you comparing the Maxima?
