need help.

my car is making this weird noise at around 3250 rpm. it started yesterday. it sounds like a really fast cricket, stuck in the front end. it makes this noise in all gears and in neutral after i have been driving for a couple of minutes. but when i stop and try to replicate the noise the noise dissapears. i just dropped my car this weekend and wonder if this could have caused something to mess up. there is no difference in performance. just this noise and it starts at say 3000rpm and stops at about 3300 rpm. anyone have this before. it sounds like maybe a belt. but i cant replicate it when im stoped. i changed my tranny fluid about 4000 miles ago and used royal purple. i also used royal purple engine oil. help i need suggestions on what this might be. also my a/c compressor is going out, do you think this could cause this noise with the a/c completely off? please help. noisies are annoying.

do you think it could be that exhaust bracket ive been reading about. what does that sound like. i know when i pass by a bunch of tree's or a wall i can hear it a lot louder, wouldn't that indicate it was coming from under the car. maybe not.

Check the cotter pins near the Hub. It's the pin that prevents the bolt from backing off on the hub. It probably is bent. Chech that first on both wheels. Did you align and balance your car after lowering it? you may want to try that too.

If the noise isn't coming from the tires be more specific about from where the noise is coming from. You post is a little vague

no, i dont believe that could be it. that sounds like it would be more of a constant noise when being driven. and i dont think that would be rpm specific. it sounds to me like it might be coming from under the car. it is sort of like a high piched cricket on meth. really fast squeaking.

i could be mistaken about the location as i can not replicate the sound when stoped long enough to narrow it down.

The TSB that addresses the sound from under the car is a buzz sound. Take it to the dealer let them figure it out

don't you have to use only Nissan-matic D/K transmission fluid?
If you have extended warranty, using other transmission fluid may void the
warranty on transmission...also Nissan noted that using other than Nissan
matic transmission fluid can damage the transmission.

i checked those brackets yesterday and both looked like they were broken right at the holes for the bolts. do you think this is the problem. i checked them and they were still pretty solid.but definatly had cracks.

another question/ i was thinking of making a skid plate for the area right beneath the y-pipe but do you think heat from the engine being trapped there would pose a problem.

the TSB says
"If the catalyst front tube support bracket is broken, cracked, bent or deformed, the bracket, not the front tube assembly, is the cause of the noise"

so i guess it is the problem...

I don't think I've heard of any higher mileage on a 6th generation than what you have stated. I hope that your experience to 80K and beyond ("still drives brand new") will be mine too, as well as that of all other Maxima owners.

I had an exhaust bracket rattle at about 2K miles. The dealership fixed it and its been great driving since then. Currently have just under 18K on my 2005 SL.

To everyone else this means that it indeed was the TSB for the broken support bracket. This sound can range from a buzz to a rattle.
