Drilled or slotted or both?

Hey guys I wrote a thread a couple of weeks ago concerning my rear brakes. They were making noise. I have decided to change all the brakes and upgrade the rotors while I'm at it. I was looking on ebay for the rotors and I see drilled and slotted. They also say that I could order them one way or the other. Just want some opinions on which ones give the best value. I have only driven my car a couple of times since then (always working). I will get back to driving it soon just wanted to knock out the noise and do it all at once. The pads on the rear look okay but I hate that hissing type noise that I get from them. While you are at it reccomend some pads. If there is a sticky on this topic point me that way.

In my experience the slotted rotors are the way to go because the drilled rotors can get stress cracks in them. I used Hawk HPS brake pads on the bbk I had on my Max, they were very quiet and minimal on the dust.

I went with the cross drilled/slotted combo, it looks nice and stress cracks shouldn't be to much of a concern cause our maxes aren't race cars.

With upgrading the rotors i know i can hit them hard and not worry about warping the rotors unlike the stock ones. I have axiss pads and they squeel abit

Agreed.

There just doesn't seem to be any benefit (except the "oh that's kewl" look) to drilled rotors on the street.

IMHO, slotted is the way to go for sure.

I was really disappointed with the stock Max rotors. Within no time, I was getting that warped rotor feeling when applying the brakes. It almost seemed like there had to be something wrong with them to be so weak, so early. Nevertheless, I finally went with some Brembo cross-drilled and slotted rotors. So far I've really been happy with them. Very pimp look with great stopping power and no warped rotor feeling. If you do go with the cross-drilled slotted, make sure you get some different pads than the factory ones. The guys at the place where I got mine installed, forgot to put on the Axxis pads and left the factory ones on. By the time I got home, my dubs were so dusty you couldn't even see the bling. I went back the next day and got the Axxis put on and the difference was unreal. Very, very little dust and better stopping power. Anyway, good luck and cross-drilled and slotted worked for me. Hey, don't forget to get those calipers painted while your at it. You'll be really happy with the look and it's cheap! PEACE OUT........

BEWARE - there's no such thing as BREMBO rotors for our cars. They simply don't make them. There is someone on ebay selling "Brembo" rotors for Maximas, but they have been issued cease and desist orders and keep comng back in different guises.

If you think you are paying for Brembo, or paid for Brembo, you have been screwed big time. Hope you enjoyed it....

Thanks for the advice it helps out alot with what to look for. Maxdizzle thanks for reminding me about painting the calipers. It is going to take some time but it will be worth it. I like the painted caliper look. It will be a good saturday morning project. I will be getting those factory pads off when I do the change.

I don't think I got screwed, it's possible, but for the price, it's hard to beat!! I got them from autoaccessorystore.com, check it out!! I talked with the guy specifically about fakes beforehand and he said that they get a blank Brembo rotor and have a guy cross-drill and slot them for you. If they are fake, then they are the bomb for fakes. And yes, I do them enjoy them and my ride is so pimpin' on your ride 'ville man (US024077), that's it's sick, believe it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So yes, I am enjoying them a lot, believe me!!!!!!!!!!!!LOL..................

Call Brenbo and ask them...they do NOT make rotors or blanks to fit Maximas. The guy gave you a line of good ole BS (or if you're in Henderson, maybe Horse S)

I got 4 x-drilled/slotted rotors from R1-concepts and axxis ultimate pads. It's was very dusty, 10x the stock setup. Well, the braking was good for 2000miles before the front rotors warped. I have the front stock rotors back with ultra-low dust pads. The braking isn't that good anymore but it's very very low-dust and smooth like butter. There's no such thing as Brembo rotors for 2004 Max.

I have had R1concept rotors on my car for about 4000 miles with cermaic pads and have no problems at all. There is much less dust than the stock and it seems to stop much better. I got the zinc slotted and x-drilled. The price was right and they seem to work well.

you guys know that they dust alot more cause the pads have to get used to the holes on the rotor.. for about 2 weeks that will stop happening and they won't dust anymore...

I went through this with my 02 max, everyday had to clean my rims, but eventually went away..

I don't care if I got Brembo or not. I would sue them, but I don't want to waste my time! LOL! Again, for the price, you can't beat them! Plain and simple whatever I did get, looks like BREMBO, performs supa tight and feels 100,000 times better than STOCK!!! The stock set-up was so whack it was pathetic!! When I would apply the brake the steering wheel would shake! I have had very little dust with my Axxis pads and I should know, because I keep my wheels blingin' 24/7! I would still recommend them, regardless. I'm just a good old country boy, lovin' horse sh.. and BOMB A$$ RIDES!!!! LOL! PEACE OUT...............

Dizzle, if you got some stainless steel brake lines, you wouldn't say the stock set up was pathetic... awsome mod for brakes and super stopping power with all the oem pads and rotors..

Yo 'Niq, I don't doubt that the stainless steel brake lines are a great addition to the Max. However, I'm not sure if the brake lines have anything to do with the warped rotors and the fact that when I would apply the brakes, even before I got my dubs, which was within a month or so after I got my Max, that the steering wheel would shake ridiculously! It got to the point of embarassment. When I would apply the brakes with someone in the Max, I would have to hold the steering wheel tightly, just to make it not shake like crazy! Maybe I'm the only one that has experienced this phenomenon. If the brake lines can fix that, you are absolutely right! But if they can't, then the rotors that came with MY Max were supa WHACK! You never know, someone on here might tell me I got FAKE ROTORS from the factory with my Max! LOL!!! I do like your brake lines though 'Niq. I've driven my Tahoe pretty crazy and it's got 55k on it and the brakes feel like brand new. So it seems pretty pathetic that we would have to replace rotors, brake lines, or anything like that shortly after buying the Max. This is just my experience with my max, other people may not have had this problem. But with the amount of people that have switched out rotors, it may be more common. PEACE OUT......

I agree, I went with the drilled only and ceramic pads. They did dust for a few weeks. But it eventually cleared up. The only thing I could live without is the tick-tick-tick sound from all the holes. Since I didnt go with slotted, they drilled another line in place of the slot. It looks great and does stop better than factory. So all in all, im good...

I have this same problem. What causes this wore pads, wraped rotors, brake lines? Only have 40K on my '04 with stock wheels.

Hey MRACURA, I'm pretty positive it's the warped rotors. I'm no brake expert and I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, but once I changed out my rotors, the problem was totally gone. It really felt good to be able to apply the brakes without having to hold onto the wheel!! I was also told by a wheel guy that the shake when applying the brakes is common with warped rotors. Your factory rotors may be able to be "turned" or something to get them fixed or you may actually need to get some new ones, either factory or aftermarket. Anyway, that's my opinion and my experience with that same problem. However, it is possible that it could be something else. Good luck!! PEACE OUT.........

Just to add to the warped rotor theme here. I guess my car didn't like me asking about changing rotors. I was cruisin back from Kings Dominion. I went to tap the brakes and all hell broke loose. I thought the road was getting bumpy or maybe I had too much coffee cause I was shakin somyhing terrible. I felt it a little the other day but after I started this thread. I guess I jinxed it. Oh well better get four new rotors and go to work. 24000 miles come on this should be an option not a must have. I curse the day I started this thread lol. I was so bad my dizzy girl new something was wrong. She thought I was getting mad. Women I guess yall know the rest.

Yeah, The Stock Rotors Are Terrible.
I Replaced Mine With The Stillen Cross Drilled Pro Xd Rototrs And The Metal Matrix Pads On The Front And Back Of My Ride.
Stops On A Dime. Very Pleased.
Love The Metal Matrix Pads. Very Little Dust.
Make Sure You Adhere To The Manufacturers Break In Period So That The Pads Wear Evenly and rotors don't warp.
absolutely no shimmy when i brake now.

I've had my R1 concepts rotors since march with about 8000 miles on them and no warping with me. The dust never stopps cause its always pushed off the rotor when you apply the brakes.

Actually just got off the phone with them cause i've been having this rattling issue ( sounds like a moving white trash wagon) and yesterday i went to fix it, thinking it was the metal shim between the brake pad and the caliper, had those issues on my 4th gen, removed the shim and no more rattle.

Well upon inspection of my drivers rear rotor, it wasn't machined properly were when on the hub, there is play, no snug fit. So i thought maybe my bolts on my wheel weren't torqued properly, well I put it back together and it still rattles, i think it hits the dust shield or something back there

So I told them the issue and just ordered a new rotor for 50 beens shipped, but its nice of them cause its my rotor is out of warranty.

Does anyone know why it wouldn't sit on the hub properly?

I think I brought my rotors from the same place that you did. Even through they are not Brembo, I have had no problems with them. I also have Hawk HF pads and just installed Mosley SS brake lines about a month ago. Warren

I'm getting my Brakes setup from Automax95 on Friday. Drilled/slotted by the way.
Anyways I am going to paint my calipers, I was thinking to go silver. I want to keep it low key but I don't want to black, too dark. And red is definitely too bright...
What do you guys think...
