Ever have your hood open on the highway?
This was a first for me in any vehicle - I decided that I wanted to have a bit of fun on the highway and stepped on the gas at about 90mph and just as it kicked down and started to take off, the hood popped open to the safety latch
.
Pulled over, checked it out and everything seemed good so ??????? why it happened in the first place. And no, I didn't forget to completely close it the last time it was opened.
Just wondering if anyone else here has experienced this.......

damn, good thing the safety latch held. my 3rd gen did the same awhile back and needless to say it scared the sh*t out of me...as well as my 2 passengers.
have it checked so that it won't happen again man.

My hood latch on my 2004 SE was loose to the point that it would rattle around when going over bumps... but only at low speeds (I'm guessing that at higher speeds the hood is sloped enough so that it is pushed down). After about 10 trips to the dealership, they finally found it and adjusted the latch so that it's tight. The hood fit is a bit weird now (almost seems too tight, but atleast it isn't loose. It was kind of scary though... I was always afraid of it popping up.

It happened on my 05 Pathfinder. The dealer's service department didn't close it all the way and it popped up while doing 70 on the highway. I closed the hood all the way after I stopped on the berm of the highway to change my soiled underwear.

how do you close your hood? do you kept it in a certain height then drop it? (not like slamming it) or do you just let it fall down to the safety latch then press it down? usually i think there's 2 clicks when you close it. most of the time i just let it drop in a certain height. hope this helps.

There is only one click when you close your hood hard - there is the safety latch position and also the final position when the main latch closes. I typically just close it hard and then give it a quick pull to see if it engaged properly.
I did notice a bit of play on the left side of the hood so I'll reset my bumper stop on the hood. There really isn't any adjustment that could be made on the latch since it is spring operated so most stealerships just clean the latch to ensure it functions properly.
It certainly made my heart race yesterday after I saw how quick that thing came up....and why this post is useless without pictures is beyond me. If you wanted to see what it looked like, pull your hood release and then go out and have a look at your hood because that is what it looked like
. That is why they are called safety latches.

It is pretty scary.
I had that happen to me about ten years ago on an '86 Firebird I owned, but the hood flew all the way up and hit the windshield. Luckily There wasn't anyone around me. I had to stick my head out of the car Ace Ventura Style and come to a stop. I had to drive around with the corners of the hood near the windshield curled up until I got rid of the car.

Today on rt10 there is a girl in a honda with her hood flat up against her windshield. A cop was sitting behind her with his flashers...didn't see the pull so not sure if she was flying or the cop was just assisting. But, somehow her hood came all the way open during her drive. Most people do about 70mph on rt10. I have heard of this happening but this was the first to see the aftermath.
