NYPD-Arnold - I think you meant to say the 7th gen might appear in spring of 2008 as a 2009 model.

That would mean the 6th gen would have had five model years (2004 thru 2008), and would have been on the dealer's lot five calendar years (spring of 2003 to spring 2008).

Nissan would not be making the changes we are hearing about for the 2007 model year, then use them only one model year. The changes for the 2007 model will be kept at least one additional year (the 2008 model year), and then the 7th generation Maxima should be released in spring (or early summer) of 2008 as a 2009 model.

 

CVT is standard fit in Japanese Teana's.. will be here in the next update for our Aussie Max's in Feb 2006 with LED tail lights and some other changes..

Nissan Global plan is that every Nissan Passenger vehicle gets CVT...over the next 3-5 years... so it is not an if but a when. (Fuel Savings ect)

 

The only thing that might derail that plan in the U.S. is a little thing called "non-acceptance". If the buyers stay away in droves, the CVT will quickly become an option ... or a droption. I understand Ford's 500 with the CVT is selling ... well, "sluggishly" would be a charitable term. It's the only readily-available CVT here other than the Murano (which comes no other way).

And as for gas mileage, the Ford CVT is rated at 20/27 city/hwy., whereas the same engine with the automatic transmission is rated at 21/29.

 

Surely Nissan will be wise enough to realize that Maxima drivers are not buying a 'car'. They are buying a 'four door sports sedan' with a history and an image of something very special.

It isn't that the CVTs are that bad. And I would expect them to get better and better as development proceeds.

Were I buying a Quest, a CVT (although not my preference) would be a minor detail. I would expect a CVT would be no problem for buyers of minivans and many other vehicles intended simply to get folks from one location to another.

But the Maxima? Uh-uh. Nope. Not my Maxima. Would be a big mistake. And the problem would not be in the CVT tranny as much as it would be in the minds of us Maxima buyers. We know what we want when we buy a Maxima. And it ain't a CVT.

 

One wonders what is meant by "a much nicer interior". Cars are very subjective and emotional for many drivers.

If the 2007 is the last model year for the 6th generation, then 2008 would be the first year for the 7th generation, 2009 would be the second year for the 7th generation (I'm glad that I didn't get a 2004-it seems that some of the problems that plagued the 2004's were ameliorated in second model year of the 6th generation 2005's), and I'll have been driving my current 2005 Maxima (purchased Dec 2004) for about four years. Maybe it would be a good time to look at another Maxima.

Excuse my ignorance, but I'm a newb........What is a CVT

 

opm45 - CVT is 'Continuously Variable Transmission'.

I won't bother you with technical details, as I have had no experience with them. A CVT transmission does not change gears. It has only one forward gear, which constantly adjusts so that engine rpms will be correct for the speed the car is going and the amount of acceleration that the driver is requesting (by pressure on the accelerator pedal).

This is probably the tranny of the future, and is supposed to be more fuel efficient. But there will be many of us Maxima drivers that will have to be dragged into the CVT age by our bootstraps.

Thanks light for getting this thread back on topic and away from personal attacks. Your posts always deserve serious consideration. Problem with AWD is that it reduces mileage and the existing Max could use a little boost in mileage vs some of the competition. Thus, I suspect you are correct that at most AWD will become an option in the 7th gen Max, whenever that version arrives.

 

I asked the salesman at my store about AWD this weekend, and he thought maybe in the new generation, as it would require too much rework of the chassis to the current version to add the linkages for the rear. Just his thoughts, I think an all whell drive maxima would be great but would also like better MPG.

That would be nice but the g35 would be pretty p'oed. I think awd opt or front wheel would keep them from bumping heads too much. The g35 handles like a dream. I just want them to get the max away from the altima. It's almost embarrasing that a stock se-r alt. is faster than the max.

Still looks like a 6th gen in most exterior aspects, new front bumper is a plus, looks like fogs are replacing turning lights. Overall I hope the true changes are like what is stated in the article, bringing the interior up to higher upscale standards. Overall, I'm still lovin it...

 

The azz end is getting slimmed down, it looks as though its not as wide and it has a horizontal crease in it to minimize the bulk of our bumpers. Is the new grill not as tall as ours or will it fit, I think it will be too small. And the wing on the back looks much bigger, not just a lip any more.

I barely noticed how they did trim down the rear... a lot. I like the new front bumper but the cutoff in the lower rear looks a bit off.

no more teef? nice new grille... like those wheels... headlight outline is nice, but moving fogs killed the internal setup.
