Service Engine Soon :(

Hello Org Buddies...

So I'm driving along and stop for a minute. When I restart my max...the Service Engine Soon light is on.

Does anybody know how to get and decipher the codes withour having to go to the dealer???

I only have 6000 miles and changed the oil twice already...so I can't imagine what it could be. I don't notice any difference while driving.

Had that happened to me sometime last year and as the others have said it was because of the gas cap.

I found this impossible.

I drove a whole day and didn't realize I forgot to put my gas cap back on. Saw my gas door partially open with the cap still on the door the next morning.

Light NEVER came on.

AutoZone and/or Dealer.

Those gassing up just before using one of those 'touchless' car washes (or any automated carwash) need to be SURE to replace the fuel filler cap before proceeding into the wash.

If you are my friend, you will not ask how I became so concerned about this possibility. I admit to nothing.

PS - My 'service engine' light did not come on either. And I really appreciate those gas additives that help get rid of moisture . . .

I had this happen near the end of my recent trip to Chicago and back. I immediately checked the gas cap -- it was tight.

Check out what the dealer found (and my experience with gasoline mileage) on this new thread on the Fluids and Lubes section of this site.

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=450870

Also, the service manager said when I brought the car in that there were about 30 different things that could cause that light to come on. I asked if they were all covered under the emission warranty, and he said no, only about 5 of them are covered under that warranty.

After I had the car repaired, I asked what had happened to caust the light to come on. He said that the engine's computer "lost it's programming" and needed to be reprogrammed from their maintance computer in the shop. I don't always believe these service managers, but this at least seems logical.

so...check it out

I went to autozone as suggested...thank you very much... and the computer said the problem is the throttle position sensor. So I have to try and get time off work to get to the stealership this week. I'll let you know what they say...

So I took my max to the stealership today. They replaced the throttle under warranty and had the car ready by the time I got off work. Didn't even try to say the car was out if warranty because of the AT grounding kit!! which I was kind of expecting...

so...alls good now...thanks
